Hi:
I have a spare running H engine and want to hook it up to a 12,500 watt generator, does anyone know if the flywheel is required for engine ballance or can I hook up direct to the crank with no flywheel?
thanks
Jim from Ontario

Thanks for the help the explanation about the inertia and stored energy makes it clear.

The flywheel is necessary for balance as well as inertia storage. Don't try to run the engine without it.

You need the flywheel. That is what helps give the motor enough inertia to keep running and running smoothly. Try starting a small lawn mower engine sometime without the flywheel on it. You will be pulling on the rope from now until the cows come home. We have big 2,000 to 10,000 hp engines that run gas compressors. The flywheels are about 6-7 feet in diameter.

In my humble opinion that engine must have a flywheel.
