This tractor has the Delco DN alternator with external regulator. It has brand new Case-IH wiring harnesses, brand new voltage regulator, alternator has been bench tested and is good. Up until today, the alternator would not charge. When I replaced the resistor which is wired in parallel with the AMP light in the dash, it started charging, 14.8 volts at full throttle. Only problem is, the AMP light stays lit. Anyone know what this means?

Not sure on an 826, but on a 444 with the same or similar arrangement it means the voltage regulator is bad. At least that is what it was on a friends 444 I fixed for him.

Thanks Ben, that's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure enough to buy another new regulator. Some information I have says that when the key switch is first turned on, all of the power needed to exite the alternator field travels though the AMP light. As soon as the alternator starts producing charge, the regulator takes over control of field current and the AMP light goes out. If the AMP light stays on, the regulator is defective. This information comes from a John Deere book, and it doesn't say what brand of alternator it applies to, but it does sound like what I've got happening. Do you know of any way to test the regulator? Under normal operation, should the alternator keep charging if the key switch is turned off? I belive this is the same system as a 444 has.
