Thanks for all the replies. I was trying to find out what's the slowest gear, A M with slow low first or a MTA with torque pulled. I pull these tractors (they are stock) I'm running out of power. I sometimes pull the MTA with 15,000 pounds. Trying to beat some JD's. they tell me they have a slower 1st gear. (720 JD) Got any suggestions on how to beat them? Without spending tons of money. Thanks, Don

don,we are facing the same problem--those jd 720/730 diesels are hard to handle if they had pump work and 18.4 rubber.they also have a 1.3 mph low gear.i hoestly think it would be cheaper to buy a 560 diesel and wind the fuel up than to sink money into our SMTA/400's to compete with them.(unless the track is junk, then they are beatable)

Don: Every IH tractor I've ever owned had that information in the operators manual, and having a tractor with TA an operators manual is a must.

My H, M, and Super H manuals do not list the speed of the low-low. Don't know where you find it, hopefully someone else will have the answer.

CNKS: I currently have operator's manuals that came with tractors for my Super A and 130, as well a manual we picked up for 140 and they all have the mph for full throttle in each gear listed. I am sure my 300, 560 656 and 1066 all had it, in operators manuals. Although must admit I had complete IH service manuals for 560, 656 and 1066. I also have sales literature for some of the later 5 speed Farmalls with TA, it wont vary a lot.

He asked for the low-low speeds for the M, SM, etc, which are NOT given in the manuals, however, I think 39M answered the question.

CNKS: In my use of the english language low- low would indicate to me he was suggesting that M and SM had dual range transmissions which we know did not exist, when in actual fact what he was talking about was the lower sped 1st gear an option available on M and SM. Is there a possibility that option was also available in SMTA, 400, 450 and 560. My 560 was slower in 1st gear than 300 or 656.

hugh, yes i was refering to the so-called combine or cornpicker low gear option that was available for M's and SM's.

39M: Just kind of curious as to whether that option continued after the TA tractors came into being. I am thinking along th lines of MTA, 400, 450 and 560. I never picked corn. Went right to combine. However my 560 was slower in 1st gear than my 300 or 656. They all had TA.

Hugh and CNKS,

I got out my H manual and looked, just for curiosity and the heck of it. It says: 1st: 2.5mph, 2nd: 3.375 mph, 3rd: 4mph, 4th: 5mph, 5th: 15.5mph, reverse: 2.5mph.

Here's the kicker, the subhead says: "based on 36" pneumatic tires". The facing page specs 38" tires, which is what I have. If the aspect ratios of the two sizes of tires are the same, I suppose you have to add a ~5% delta for the larger size, then deduct the ratio for the T/A (T/A postdates my H manual by some years, so it's not covered).

I'd never noticed before that the manual spec'd 36" tires for speed. Amazing the things you learn here.

Do you have an authenic H manual? -- mine is based on 38's for the H and 36's for the HV. If you happen to have a very early H and the original manual, these had 36 inch tires. The speeds in mine exactly match the ones in the manual for my dad's 47 H. As a kid I was interested in that sort of thing, for some reason I still remember. The speeds you list are very close to those of the HV.

CNKS,
The manual came with the tractor, which is a later model. The book is stained and yellowed -- so my guess is that it's original -- but who knows what happened over the years.

We had a '47 H in the 50's and into the 60's -- but as a kid, I surely never looked at the manual so even if my memory was real good, I wouldn't know.

From sales literature for a Farmall 544, using 13.6 x 38 rear tires. ..... ..... ..... ..... ..mph
SPEED*****DIRECT********TA
--1----- ----- 2-1/2----- ----1-3/4
--2----- ----- 4----- ----- --2-3/4
--3----- ----- 5----- ----- --3-1/4
--4----- ----- 7----- ----- --4-3/4
--5----- -----18----- ----- -12-1/4
-Rev----- -----2-3/4----- ----2

It doesn't give engine rpm for these speeds but am assuming it would be at rated PTO speed.
