I have a 1950 WD-9. I know that tractor moved into the Super series and then the 600 and 650 all with essentially the same engine. But can someone take me back in history? What was the engine of a WD-40? Some have commented here and even a picture that the W-40 and WK-40 were six cylinder engines. Was the diesel also six cylinder?
Thanks much.

Rich: Thanks for bringing this subject up and many thanks to Bob M and Jere for the great history lesson. I have one question, how did the WD-40 and WD-9 compare in horse power.

I remember a contractor doing land clearing and leveling in our area and using both the TD-14 as well as the TD-9. I am talking early 50s and these machines were equiped with Bucyrus-Erie dozer blades. I notice in the book 150 Years of IH 9 was around 46 belt hp and 14 was around 61 belt hp. I remember these machines working on dozer work and having termendous torque for their rpm.

The first 40 diesel came out in 1934 & had verticle injectors. Second version had 10 degree injectors & a different head. Third version (1939) had 45 degree injectors & the same head gasket as the second. Every update had larger thickness bearings. The 40 engine went on to become the TD-14 engine as the pist/sleeve, bearings & valves are interchangeable. TD-18 just added 2 more cyls.

Rich - the W40 and WK40 use a 6 cylinder IHC truck engine (the "red diamond"??), while the WD40 has a huge 4 cylinder. The diesel shares the starting method of the WD9 and it's successors, but I doubt much else.

Punch below for a closeup shot of a WD40 engine at the RPR last weekend. Check out the polished brass carburetor!

Bob, thanks for a great history lesson with pictures even! I learned to plow on a W-30 but didn't learn anything about 40's until after I got my 9. Now I got the bug to try to find a 40 that needs a home. Your pictures were of a beautiful restoration.
