300U hot hydraulics/power steering question

Would a blockage or improperly working power steering valve/box cause the hydraulics on my 300U to get hot? The hydraulics on my 300U get very hot when the tractor is run for a couple of hours, such as when mowing trails (long, straight driving). There is also a buzz/hum that seems to be coming from the area of the power steering gear.

I've been through most of the hydraulic system (pump resealed, cleaned and resealed valve and flow control valve) except for the power steering valve/box. The steering gear has some slop in it--I've tried to adjust as much of it out as I can--would this cause the power steering valve to work too much? Any easy fixes to clear a blockage in the steering system?

Thanks for the help.

It could be dirt, but if you have a noise as you say then there is a valve hung up causeing it to high pressure could be power stering divider or the unload valve or on that tractor you can switch remote valves from single to double but turning the spool in the valve if that is not set right it can cause this your loose steering will not.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to bypass the power steering the next time that I work the tractor hard to see if the system still heats up. As far as I can tell the single/double acting setting on the single valve in the system is set correctly. I have also recently cleaned the screen in the reservoir.

Is there any way to correct a problem with the power steering divider without having to tear the whole steering box apart?

If you're talking about the flow control valve that sends priority flow to the steering, that's not in the steering wheel valve body, that's in the pressure regulator valve that's next to the seat on the right side, on the rearmost inner position. I've had mine apart, not much to go wrong in there except busted springs, not likely, or a crudded up orifice screen on the safety valve. It comes apart in a pretty straightforward manner, and gaskets to put it back together are available at Case/IH if you don't want to make your own.

Had a 300U back in the mid 50s with loader, one of the loader hydraulic cylinders had a rough spot inside the cylinder. The result was shredded hydraulic seal material all through the hydraulic system. Eventually it clogged the inlet filter screen in the reservior under the seat. The symptoms were slow hydraulic lifting, hydraulic squealing niose and the hydraulic oil was very hot. To access this filter screen, remove seat and remove the top of the hydraulic reservior under the seat.
