I've got an IT shop manual for my B414 that also covers your 404. according to the manual:" the hydraulic lift systemdraws its oil supply from the transmission and differential housing and thus, the tractor rear center frame and hydaulic lift system share a common reservoir." The condensed service data indicates 28 qts. for the trans and diff. As far as checking the level, I'll get back to you, since I'm recuperating from a morning chore of changing the timing belt on my wife 'scorolla and I am not very patient at reading manuals at the moment. Good car, but not much room to play in the engine compartment!

I have a B414 also, I check the fluid by removing a plug on the top of the casing. Its right behind the seat on the right side of the tractor. It should be a regular pipe plug that sits right on top of the casing, I check it and always fill it to the bottom of the hole. Hope this helps.....

I&T shop manual #IH-21 states:
(To Refill transmission)

Remove filler plug from transmission top cover and level plug from right rear (back of axle housing)of rear center frame. Fill rear center frame to level plug opening with IH HyTran fluid or a mixture of IH Torque Amplifier Additive and SAE 10W engine oil in the ratio of one quart of additive to each four gallons of engine oil.
