I decided to try to start a tractor that had not been run in many years. I could smell the odor of bad gas in the tank so I drained it. There was about 5 gallons. I didn't want to just dump it somewhere so I put it into a tractor that I use on a regular basis to use it up. The tractor ran well with no problems but you could smell the odor in the exaust when it first started up. I mowed about 10 acres and it ran fine. The next day I went to use the tracor and it would not start. There was no compression. None! I pulled the valve cover off and found all the intake valves were sticking but closing very slowly. After spraying penetrating oil on the stems and tapping on them with a plastic hammer the engine purred again as it always does. I have since drained the fuel AGAIN and took it to a recycler as I should have done in the first place. I hate to brag about how foolish I was but I have never heard of this type of circumstance before.

Yes, I had an old Triumph motorcycle that sat for a couple of years when I was in college. When I tried to get it running, I had to literally poke out all of the jets in the carb. Spray carb cleaner wouldn't touch it. Nasty. Every time I smell gas that has gone bad, the odor sticks to my nose for a while.

I never tried to use it as fuel when it smelled and looked like that, but it does make a good weed killer though.

Did that with a snow thrower. It had old gas in it and it started up fine and ran like a top. Next morning, like you said, the valves were all gummed up and stuck open. So yes it has happend to me. Will it again? I don't think so.

Edward: Stale gas is stale gas. It turns to almost shelac. Back several years ago I was a bit squeezed for space, so stored my SA away from home for the winter. The guy was a friend so I told him to use it once in a while. He never did, and I fought with it for a month in spring. First item was screen in sediment bowl sealed right off, then the carb and then more of the same coming from tank from time to time. This gas has one use, getting a fire going in brush, wet rubble, etc. that you wish to burn.
