Ignorance was bliss. Finally replaced the heat sensor and thermostat on my 560D, now I'm not sure if it is running correctly.

At 3/4+ throttle sitting in the yard on an 85 degree day the temp gets up to around 225 degrees. Is that normal, or too hot? How hot is too hot? The manual just says when the thermostat opens.

Thanks in advance - Sam.

You must have an aftermarket temp gauge cause the one on my 560 has only cold/run/hot, are you sure it's reading correctly? Take a thermometer and put it in the radiator,(the wifes candy thermometer works great) then run tractor and when thermostat opens the temp on the thermometer will quit climbing and will start to fall, this should be at whatever temp your theromstat is.

Farmer Gene,

It is a Case/IH gauge, dealer replacement for my cold/run/hot. I was wondering if it was reading correctly, but was a bit slow on coming up with a test. I'll sneak the candy thermometer out this evening (and wash it well before putting it back).

I was also thinking of pulling the thermostat and running it to see the difference, but the thermometer will be quick and easy.

The radiator is clean on the outside and the fan is pulling air through well. Divide and conquer!

Thanks - Sam C.

Sam,
I had the right idea, but I kinda screwed the procedure up, so I'm copying this out of a Chilton's book for you.
Start the engine cold, remove the radiator cap, and insert a theometer into the radiator. Allow the engine to idle. After a short while, there will be a sudden, rapid increase in coolant temperature. The temperature at which this sharp rise stops is the thermostat opening temperature.

Couldn't wait to get home, had my wife run the experiment. After half an hour of idling the coolant had expanded enough that it was overflowing and she put the cap back on. At that point the candy thermometer said 160, while the gauge said 210. She didn't watch it close enough to say when the thermostat opened. I think I'll pull the gauge and test it against the thermometer on the kitchen stove.

OK, I just read the archives and was embarrassed to see this topic a few weeks ago - guess I should search and then post.

Assuming it is running too hot and that the thermostat was just replaced what is next?

Thanks again - Sam C.

I have had trouble with even new thermostats so I would suggest that you remove the thermostat and place it in a pan of water on the stove and use a candy therm to moniter the heat and see when it opens and at what temp. It just may not be the correct themostat. If this all checks out, take the grill off and look closely at the louvers in the radiator and make sure they are not pluged with dirt. Hope this helps. HD
