This is all new to me. I'm not sure if I have a problem or if this is somewhat normal for the Farmall A, but when I engage the PTO it grinds so hard it stings my hand. This must be excessive. How do I fix this? Also, I've been told that some folks are putting STP in the transmisson to stop the tranny when the clutch is engageed so it's not spinning when you go to put it in gear. Is this a good idea? Mine grinds when I put it into gear the first two or three times. After that it seems okay. Does anything else operate off of the transmission? Appreciate the help.

There are no gears to enguage the pto. There is a tube with two ears and that slides forward to enguage the main shaft which has two ears just dont be in such of a hurry to enguage pto excessive banging of these ears will round the two off the main shaft and then you will have to replace it as the pto will jump out of gear because of the wear.

Larry: This is method I use to put PTO on my A in gear. Depress clutch count to 5 slowly put transmission in gear and then engage PTO. If transmission is in gear PTO can not grind, if you do not want transmission in gear just shift back to neutral after PTO is engaged. Sometimes you will have to engagr clutch and move tractor slighly before PTO will go in gear. 80/90 gear lube will work fine.

You do have to allow time for the gears to stop before shifting or engaging the PTO. I've found that 90/140 weight gear lube in the trans makes for a quieter unit and it spins down pretty fast.

If the problem you are describing happens when you try to engage the PTO imediately after engaging the clutch, it's probably because the shaft is still spinning. Try giving it some more time, and I would think adding thicker oil/stp would cause it to slow down sooner. If you are giving it what seems to be enough time, maybe your clutch is sticking ?

Brian.

Thanks, Brain. I just replaced the clutch. All looks good there. The PTO grinds when I'm in neutral gear. STP is okay? How do I drain the tranny and add new oil? Where's the drain. I have the International Harvester Service Manual for Farmall A, AV, B and BN but it does not show the drain plug or fill plug. Thanks.

Larry, If the transmission is warm, it can spin for quite a while before it stops spinning causing grinding. Also, if you don't have enough transmission fluid in the transmission it will also keep spinning. The drain plug is on the bottom of the main transmission casting on the right rear side. It is a plug with an internal square hole. The filler plug is by the shifting lever. The full plug is on the left side of the front of the transmission. Fill until it comes out the hole on the full plug. According to my manual, the transmission holds 5 quarts of transmission fluid. Roger

Related ?-What do you use to take out that bolt with the internal square hole? Is 80/90 weight alright, I've got a 5 gallon bucket of it with a pump, and that sure is easier than having to buy some more by the gallon. This would only be for a few hours of light plowing. Thanks

Those plugs with the square hole can be removed using a socket drive handle.

There are two drain holes. One at the bottom of the transmission, and a small one on the bottom of the pto. I don't know about using STP, I just did the transmission oil, I use 90 weight gear lube. Incidently, if you've never changed this oil, you may want to pull the shift cover off and look inside to see how clean it is. I also put a magnet on the bottom to attract any metal that maybe flowing in the oil.
I forget how many quarts the transmission holds, I think it's about six, I'm not sure how much a container of stp will do. On my tractor, I really noticed alot more of that gear grinding and PTO grinding when engaging either.

Good luck.
