I pull up in northern Indiana and there isn't anybody that pulls up in the 9000-10000 lb class other than 830 John Deeres. A guy south of me has a 660 diesel and said that he pulled it about 12 times, and brought trophies homw about every time. He has recently put a turbo on it so he can't pull legally now. Would a 660 with 806 pistons in it be a good puller, or farming tractor? What kind of horsepower would it have? The guy I mentioned got 100 horse out of his diesel with 806 pistons and the turbo. Or would a 460 with 806 pistons in it be a good puller on up the classes? Been looking for a 660 for quit some time, but can't seem to find them here in Indiana. Thanks for the advice!!

A 660 would be a good pullin tractor.I have a 560 standard with a turbo and I have the pump set to the 706 rpm spec and the fuel turned up 20% and it put out 112HP on pto dyno.It has more potential if I would turn up the fuel even more.
660 woul be better because that tractor runs more rpm from the factory. We limit the rpm at some pulls here to 10% over.I turn it up and down depending on the pulls I go to.

Im sorry but you guys are NUTS! think about what you will be pulling against. HMMMM..... 4020 Diesel, 4010 Diesel, 706 Diesel, 806 Diesel, 1206 Diesel, ext.... A 660 is just to heavy to compete in the weight class it would be in. You can do way more to these tractors for less money and weigh less than a 660 plus have more horsepower and be a more balanced tractor. All I'm saying is think about what you will be pulling against, A hopped up 660 wont outpull a STOCK 4020 and they would come close to weighing the same. Sorry I had to be the one to break it to you.

My brother and I Just purchased a 660 Diesel. WE took it to our local IH dealer to have tran, engine oil changed. WE had it put on the DYNO and the print out showed 88.5 HP. This is just stock nothing done to it.

We are also allowed to go 10% over too. That is one reason I would like to goet a 660 because of their 2400 rpm's that is stock. Kev, did you put any bigger pistons in your 560? Thanks for the help!!

I'm not a tractor puller, but I do think that it would make a fairly good puller. 660 Diesel was 80 horsepower from the factory. 100 horsepower is possible by just turning up the fuel pump. The reason you don't find them in the Indiana is that they're a Standard tractor and you're in row-crop country. You have to go out west to find them. I'm in Minnesota, and I've only seen one 660 in person.

Yeah, there isn't to many people around my area that own them. I know that they were built for wheatland type deal and fields that were 1-2 mile long. Still would be a nice tractor to have in my opinion. Thanks!!

Your are correct about 660s being a western tractor. I worked one summer for a cousin in southern Alberta about 12 miles north of US border, he had two 660s, 806, 906 with turbo. There were other neighbors around with 660s also. 660s were great tractors, we ran them for about 2 months from 6 AM till 9 PM in 3rd gear at about 2000 RPM pulling 21ft. of noble blade cultivator. Kept the air cleaner clean, oil changed regularly and had no problems. The 906 with the turbo was new that summer and spent at least 3 weeks in the shop with turbo problems.

good luck finding a 660

There's no such thing as a 906. You must be thinking of a 1206.

It was in 1967 and it was a new model that year with a turbo, maybe IH 966 ? The next summer I went back and he had traded for a 1066 because the other one was a lemon.

The 1206 came out in 1965, and the 1256 came out about the middle of 1967 (I've heard that they could both be lemons). 966 and 1066 didn't come out until 1971.

you can get 100+ hp out of a 560 with a turbo.that's without the 806 pistons,we use ours in the field but we don't pull it anywhere.

Our pulling area don't allow turbo's unless they are stock from the factory. The only turboed tractor that has pulled that I have seen with a turbo was an Oliver Super 99 3 cylinder GM diesel. I imagine that it would still pull good with out the turbo. Thanks for the advice!!

The oliver 99 gm's don't have turbos they have blowers or scavenging pumps which is actually what they are.
