Shifting problems with 684

I have a 684 that I have had hydraulic problems for some time. I put in a new pump about two years ago, cleaned the Multiple control valve a couple of times since then. The power steering has always been slugish (any suggestions concerning this would be welcome). Lately I have had a problem with the tractor going into gear.

The following seems to happen once the tractor get hot. Say I'm shifting from forward to reverse at high RPM, once I shift and let go of the clutch the tractor will start to move and stop, or sometime it will not move at all. At one time I could lower RPM to idle and it would take off. After a while it stops altogether. It will not work in Hi or low gears or different gears. Typically I can let it idle for a while and it will begin to shift again.

Any suggestions on what could be the problem?

Hi, Does the 684 have TA? My brother has a 684 with TA and it does the same thing. Sometimes when it is hot if you push in the clutch, it will not go again. The only way to start again is to put the hi/lo/rev lever in neutral position and release the clutch for a few seconds and then engage the hi/lo/rev level. Last spring we replaced clutch, pressure plate, bearings and had the flywheel turned but did not help the above problem. Interesting discovery when we did clutch job was that the main bearing cap behind the flywheel was loose. This tractor also appeared to use a little engine oil especially if you were working in a hilly field. There were never any signs of blue smoke only an occasional drop of oil from the clutch inspection plate. Since tightening the main bearing cap no more oil consumption. Since this is the first time this tractor has been split, I guess someone at the factory forgot to torgue the bolts down.
I questioned an IH mechanic about the not starting problem and he said it was probably the hydraulic pump that drives the TA and the PTO. It apparently is located in the inspection hole between the clutch and the transmission. It is an independent pump that runs off the PTO shaft, sumps from the transmission, supplies the TA clutch in HI and the PTO clutch and dumps into the hydraulic lines that go to the oil cooler.
Apparently there is a pressure test that can be done by breaking into the hydraulic lines on the right side of the tractor under the battery box.
The other thing the mechanic said was there was a splitter/check valve on the pressure side of the pump to hold pressure on the HI TA clutch so the tractor would not run away on a slope when it was shut off.
Now my brother's will not hold on a slope in HI TA when shut off. LO TA is OK. But appearently LO TA is a mechanical clutch and does not rely on hydraulic pressure.

I hope someone has the cause or solution.
