I rewired a cub yesterday for a friend even though they arent my favorite type of tractor to work on, or maybe Im missing something, I believe the manafacture didnt do a lot of thinking about maintenance in the field by making the hood and tank in one piece. My question to you cub fellows is do you have a temporary tank that you can use to check it out before putting it back together? Thank the Lord this one checked out ok when I finished, I sure would not have wanted to take it apart again. Thanks ED

Ed just use a riding lawn mower gas tank that works just fine for me.

I know just what you mean. It's one of the things I don't like about cubs too. I've seen some that somebody cut the hood to separate the gas tank from the hood. I guess they didn't like it either.
I've used the plastic gas tank from an old mower, just ty-rapped it in place somewhere high enough for gravity to work.

I had the same problem when I was checking out my new '49. I used a tank of an old snowblower. secured it to the bell housing, and went for a burn. Will probably hook it up again once I'm done with the engine and Touch Control work.

A plastic fuel tank from a cheap Tecumseh-powered push mower (Sears, MTD, Murray, etc) works fine. Has a molded in outlet nipple that a 1/4" fuel hose will slip right over. Holds maybe a quart and a half - enough to run a Cub 15 minutes or so. These tanks are plentiful; most can be removed from the mower without tools. Ask a your nearby mower shop - likely they'll have several in their junk mower pile.

A tank from a cheap riding mower works even better - same idea as above but will hold a couple gallons of gas...

How about one from a boat? Maybe a motorcycle? You might even be able to make one using a small plastic gas jug, just punch a hole in the bottom, or near the bottom, epoxy a fitting into it, and then fit it with a shut-off valve of some sort.

Ed, the tank from an old garden tractor or mower works well. Find someone who is into old David Bradley walk-behinds. They usually can find a tank from a parts tractor. These are really good because they have a shut-off and sediment bowl already on them.
