I just bought a 544 diesel that's in pretty nice shape, but it has a car muffler (backwards, no less). This is my first diesel, don't know squat about them. Is this muffler killing my power, or is it OK to leave it this way?

It's a good thing(?)there are no laws against abusing tractors like there are for swatting your kid on the butt.
The altered back pressure on the engine-valves is not doing anything any good. Too little -- too much either way will not give optimum performance.
Plus it's gotta look pretty dumb.LOL

i would get to your local farm store or go to your local case ih dealer get the car muffler off of it it is not good for your tractor. a muffler ,clamp and rain cap shouldnt be over 50.00 dollars.

Your right Wilson. I've read where a restricted exh. causes piston temps to climb, could score a piston in the engine if worked hard. I always thought a 544 FARMALL Diesel would be a great little tractor, 2/3rd's of a 656!
