3 point hitch on my C

I finished up my 3 point hitch project this weekend. Ever since I bought my C a couple years ago I knew I would eventually need to have a 3 point hitch on it. Until I bought this tractor I had only a vague idea of what a 3 point hitch was and had no idea how they worked. When my neighbor gave me an old 3 point scraper blade in trade for some electrical work I did for him I decided it was time for the hitch. I looked at Worksaver and Saginaw (why would anyone buy a Worksaver? Saginaw is about the same money but has built in hydraulics). For what I do with my tractor the $600-$700 price tag was just too much.
I searched everywhere I could think of to find some type of plans, thinking surely someone has done this before and posted the info on the Internet somewhere. After all, just about everything else can be found on the Internet. No luck. I found lots of plans for hitches for older JDs - what's up with that? After much head scratching, looking at lots tractors with 3 points and even receiving some photos from from a very generous contributor to this forum, I set out to make my own hitch.
I bought a couple lift arms, top link, and various pins from a local farm supply store, got the leveler arms from a salvage yard and fabricated the rest out of scrap metal. I found it very helpful to have the 3 point scraper on hand as a reference while I built the hitch.
So far I am very happy with the way it turned out. I don't know how much of an implemet I'll be able to lift with this hitch as it runs off the touch control. However, it operates my scraper blade very well. I will be adding a box scraper to my implement line up and possibly a 4' mower. The best part is that I only spent about $150 and a couple skinned knuckles to make it.
I've noticed there a quite a few questions about 3 point hitches on the forum.

PS: about a year or so ago, one of you guys mailed me some photos of your home made 3 point hitch set up. Regretfully, I have lost the name of who sent those to me. I would like to sincerely thank that individual for taking the time and effort to mail me photos. Many many thanks as the photos were a tremendous help!!

I know I"m a few years late, but I sure could use any advice, photos or drawings etc to fabricate a 3 pt hitch on our Super C. We have a McCormick 7 ft sicle bar mower on it, but I"m having trouble finding parts for it. Right now, the main support "L" shape bar is bent, and I can"t find one, and to be truthfull, I"m getting tired of riveting the cutter plates on the bar! :). I"d like to make a 3 pt hitch for it - like Steve Mason or the gentleman ("SuperC"?) who helped Steve with some photos. Thanks again

Steve,
Great looking work on your tractor. I am very new to tractors, and the 140 I have is my 1st. I use it regularly to mow my 80 acres, but the belly mower is taking a beating from rocks. I would love to be able to add a brush-hog mower to the back and preserve the original one. Would it be possible to get a few more picts from various angles, so that I could try to replicate your modification??? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Steve, it was me that sent the photos. Glad I could help. Your project turned out great. Looks real nice! Congradulations.

Bill, In the photos you sent me you have a mower attached to the tractor. How big is that mower?
I am curious as to how much weight that touch control will lift. I am also looking at adding a mower to my implement line-up and wonder how big a mower I can put on there.
Thanks!
Steve

Steve, I don't remember what attachment I had on the photos. I have a 5 foot brush hog (blue) and a 6 foot finish mower (yellow).
I believe the brush mower weighs about 450lbs and the finish mower weighs about 650lbs.
The 3-point will pick them both up and the C can handle them easily. 650 lbs. is about the most my 3 point will lift - good enough for every attachment I own.
As for thanking me, you owe me nothing. You see, I felt the same as you - didn't want to put too much into it. One day, I saw an old C parked behind a building and stopped to take a look at it. It had a home-made three point. The owner came out and told me his 80 year old father built it years ago. I came back and took some measurements and pictures. Then I stopped at a couple of used tractor places for some more measurements (from Ford 8N's -same as you) and bought the parts at TSC. Somebody helped me (and I couldn't even thank him) and I helped you - I'm even.
Bill

Ok Bill we'll call it even. Funny how it all goes around isn't it? Some 80 year old guy built a hitch for his C and had no idea he was going to help others with his engineering.
I'm off to look at mowers for my C...
thanks again

Hey Bill,
I am so sorry about that - I had made a note about who sent me those photos and I put the note in with the photos but I'll be danged if I could find that note. I sure wanted to thank you for going through the effort and cost of getting those photos to me. Those pictures were sucha big help. You can see the similarities to your hitch. Mine is not built as strong as yours is but I hope it is strong enough to do what I need.
Thanks for your help - it sure made the engineering a lot easier for me.
I owe you!
Steve

I had no idea those wheel weights were for something other than a C since they were on the tractor when I bought it. I learned something new again today.

Steve: It looks quite sharp to me. I can see the 8N guys giving you a hard time on the iron it takes to finish off a Farmall. Did you ever see my answer on switch grass.
