If your oil is at all milky you need to check for a coolant leak. Common problems are the cyl o rings and head gaskets. There is no reason water can come from the outside unless it was stored outside with the hood off durring a hurricane. Well water can get in easier than that but not normaly. I use Delo 30 weight oil in my super c, 300 and h. Normaly I use 15w40 in everything else and even in the winter it is fine. I tried 10w30 once and it is just too thin for the tractors. My super c and H are both freshly rebuilt engines that hold 60 psi on 30 wt no matter the temp but drop off some on multigrade. Delo is a heavy duty detergent oil designed for 2 stroke diesel trucks so it is good. detroit recommends 40 weight now for their older engines mostly because of the blower seals leaking on the lighter 30 weight. Farmall recommended 30 wt in theirs so that is what I use.It works good too. I have had the temps down to 30 below before we moved here and it never had a problem. Just let it warm up slow. I usualy hand crank the c anyway so I just give it a few cranks with the ignition off to get the oil going first if it is real cold.

I hate when that happens! I need to know what grade of oil I should use in my Super A. It sat around for several years before I bought it and I noticed that the oil is a little "milky". I am giong to change it this weekend and I wanted to know what I should use. Also what's the story on "detergent and non-detergent" oils. What should I use? I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and our weather ranges from -40F to +100F ( -40C to +35C). Thanks

You can get into the archives and get about 5000 different opinions, personally I use 15w-40 in everything I own.

The company I work for uses 15W-40 in everything they run. Even the Fords where they recommend 5W-20. To tell the truth, they all start using oil at the 50 to 70K mark. This includes a Ranger that is assigned to only me - and I drive it like I do my personal vehicles. I use 5W-30 in my personal vehicles and they never use oil.. even past the 200K mark. That 15W-40 oil looks like maple syrup even on a 40 degree morning. It just can't be good for a new, tight engine on a cold morning.

New oils don't have viscosity shear problems like the old oils did. You don't need the extra thickness for the oil to hold up. You lose cold weather pumpability with the thick stuff. Personally, my philosophy is one of "thinner is better" - at least in a mechanically sound engine.

Final answer? That depends on whos opinion you wish to believe. Just go to some of the maintenance tips posted here, under the index at the left side of these pages. Read what they say and make up your own mind.

It is a good idea to drop the oil pan and clean it out. Then I'd use modern multi-viscosity oil in 10W30. Change it again soon after getting the engine warm a few times.

You'll probably get pretty mixed opinions on this but this is how I see it. First of all, detergent vs non-detergent. The detergent oils help keep the inside of the engine clean, however these were unavailable when the tractor was built. If your tractor has had nothing but non-detergent in it since new then suddenly changing to detergent could loosen built up crud which can cause various problems. If your engine is clean inside or is currently running detergent oil that is what I would use. I use straight 30wt. oil in mine but run it very little during the winter, if I used it more I might try a multi-weight or a lighter weight of oil. I haven't yet seen it get down to minus 40 and I'm sure if it did I wouldn't be out driving my tractor. Hope this helps. SAm in NS
