My neighbor (and good friend) has a M for sale that I went to check out. The tractor is complete, original and looked in really nice condition. I ran real good too. Then I cracked open the drain plug on the oil pan and drained about 12 onces of anti-freeze into a jar. Now I'm not an expert mechanic, but know that its either the head gasket, cracked head, or a cracked block. Anyone have any ideas or hints to help me determine the problem so I can figure out what to offer him for it. Thankyou - Jeff

I have an M with simular problem. I have it tore down right now. My problem appears to be a blown head gasket. The amount of antifreeze in my case was much less. Could ussually drain off 2 or 3 tablespoons of oil out of the pan after a rather lengthy time. I guess the amount could be alot different depending on where the gasket was leaking and so forth. I had the head off of the old thing after a couple of evenings work. You won't know for sure without a tear down though.

You know, pulling the head is not the most difficult thing to do. In most cases, the problem will be the head or head gasket. Perhaps you can buy the tractor, subject to an inspection afterwards. Pull the head at your own expense and either return the tractor if the problems are major, or agree on a price reduction.

I agree with the previous poster to adjust offer as if it is major problem. If the tractor runs good I would try a good stop leak before tearing into engine. Have seen them run for years with stop leak in them with no unwanted side effects. If you are a has to be original and perfect kind of person a tear down is only option. Just my opinion.

Without taking the engine apart you have no way of knowing the exact cause. At this point you can only assume the worst and make him an offer accordingly.

Both of the old M tractors I found with water in the oil had the same problem. Apparently, the cylinder had a crack or pinhole. The sleeve didn't fit quite tight enough and a drop of water fell about once a minute from the bottom around the liner. That's been about fiftenn plus years ago. A little stop leak and I still see both of them operating on a regular basis, Adjust your price accordingly, then, also, pull the valve cover and watch for beads around the rocker arms.

most probly you will find a crack behind no-2 or no-3 cylinder sleeve, the fix is to pull the sleeves re-sleeve the block then re-set the dry sleeves have had a bunch of them done like that.
