I just snagged a 12v battery, plug wires, and 12v coil off a donor truck i have behind the shed, stuck em on the super m (because I already have them, dont want to spend much right now), and now i have a miss at WOT that wasnt there before. Truck has a resistor in the supply line to the coil, would it help to wire that into the m? Charging doesnt seem to be a problem ampmeter claims its pushing about 20 amps into the battery.

Did you change to negative ground with the new setup? You may actually be showing a 20 amp drain. When I converted my SMTA over to 12 volts with an alternator I used the inline resister between switch and coil. It is a chrysler type. Mine lasted about 3 years and then I had to replace it. It is really cheap so don't mind. I would agree that you shouldn't get any charge with the original generator and regulator. Have heard people say a 6 volt generator will put out more voltage if you have a different regulator but haven't tried that

You said you also swapped the plug wires. The plug wires don't care if the juice is from a 6 or 12 or 24 volt coil or from a magneto. I am guessing that one of the plug wires from the truck is bad. Try switching back or use a different one from the truck. I hope this is all it takes.

Paul,
Good point about the plug wires. The ones in a truck a probably carbon core for radio shielding. The ones in the tractor were probably stranded copper. The truck wires have a lot more resistance and therefore don't make nearly the spark a set of copper wires would. That could the the difference right there.

The purpose of the resistor is to let 6 volts go though the coil and points instead of 12. If the truck has it, it will need to be put on the M. The points will not last very long at 12 volts.

Tell us more. Did you swap the generator and regulator from the truck too? If you didn't, there's no way you would be getting 20 amps while using that 6 volt regulator on a 12 volt battery. Measure resistance across the coil. If it shows about 3 ohms, you don't need the resistor. If it shows about 1.5 ohms, you need that resistor in line.

I had a problem with my 340, and I thought the resistor was bad,so I by-pased it. When I restarted the tractor it had a miss that wasnt their before,I was told that points are only good for 8 volts, and this is the purpose of the resistor.????? ?????

from what people tell me there is no such thing as a 12 volt coil. it is a 6 volt coil with internal resister. that being said, if the truck had an external resister you will need one on the super m too.

I have a Super M which I pull with...After I built the engine, the 6 volt wouldn't start it..
So, I converted to 12 volt.....I used all the original ign. equipt.,,changed the gen, headlight
bulbs, and put an inline resistor on it...that was over a year ago and it still runs perfect..PS
I still use the original starter....hope this all helps you....
