This one is from you can believe me or not. I have both of the clutch based PTO's.... The "Early" model clutch types have to be prefilled from the vent hole in the top. This prevents the PTO from running dry while the oil sloshes it's way from the differential to the PTO. It is only designed to maintain the level once the it is full. This prevents the PTO from emptying the transmission if a large leak starts. You can over fille the transmission and it will work it's way in, but the safe way is to fill it from the vent hole.

I have a 460 and the PTO oils from rear end hyd oil, drain plug is to drain it if you work on it or when you change oil. I have owned it since early 1970's only times oil has been changed was when I had to go into trans or rear end to work on it. Believe for many years it had the tar worked out of it. was my round baler tractor for many years plus haybine 7ft. offset plow ect.

Red: It's been 25 years since I had my 560, however most gear boxes of that era, be they transmissions, PTOs, belt pullies, etc. had three plugs for this. A drain plug, fill to level plug and a fill plug. You look it over I'm sure you will find this. What you need is someone who still currently has one. May be that guy who responded earlier with the 3 460 will respond.

I have a 1962 model 560 gas tractor that I bought new . The oil reaches the PTO from the differential. When that is drained you will need to check that the oil level is OK in the rear end compartment, the Hydr. all gets it`s oil from this compartment. Hope this is of some help.

Don: I've kind of been hanging back expecting this to happen. Red Man is suggesting the oposite to what your saying and I some how suspect you both may be right. I had known for years some of the 460 & 560 had planetary PTO and some had clutch type. It now appears there are two separate and different clutch type PTO. So we have three didderent PTO used on these tractors.

Like you I bought my 560 new, a diesel in 1963 and had it until 1981. It is now 22 years since I've had my 560 along with 5 other Farmalls, 2 Case and a Deere, I had at the time. I did have the others after that so as result I am a bit rusty on the memory item. However I will say like Red Man my 560 PTO had to be filled separate from the transmission. My PTO was the clutch type with 1.5" fill hole in the top of gearbox. You also adjusted the clutch pack on that PTO through that same hole with a special tool you could get only at IH back then. I believe I do remember a bit about that PTO as I had it rebuilt probably 7-8 times in 18 years and the 11,000 hours I put on it. I can tell you this, remembering every little detail when you are running 9 tractors, a combine and 4 trucks along with other associated equipment, is next to impossible. With that variety manuals get well used.

The PTO on these tractors does NOT get it's oil from the rear-end. They hold about 2qts. of Hy-trans fluid. Fill to the level plug on the side of the unit, pour through the fill plug on top of the unit.
