Is there a conversion or can you pull the hydraulics off of a SA to fit an A. I have an A with manual lifts and would like to convert to hydraulics.

Rob, the easiest hydraulic add on for a Farmall A or B would be a "Char-lynn power pack". This is a complete unit - pump, reservior, control valve, all in one that attaches directlly to the PTO or Belt Pully shaft. It is about the size of 2 belt pullies end to end. This arrangement does not give you a rock shaft but you can use hydraulic cylinders for that job.

Sorry I do not know of a supplier. I have two of them which I picked up at a farm sale. I am sure they are around if you look hard enough,. Might try a "Want Ad" in the classified's on this site.

Very expensive to do. I have everything you would need to convert to hyd., but then you wouldn't have much of your "A" left. It would be a Super A.

As Hugh said, easier and cheaper to trade tractors and get a Super A. I do have one tractor that has a hydraulic pump rigged to run off the generator belt. That would not give you the rockshaft system of the Super A, but would give you a way to rig a control valve and cylinder. Still pretty expensive to buy the pump, reservoir, control valve, hoses, cylinder, make brackets and so on to rig up the cylinder, etc.

Paul: I might add it is one heck of a job to make those add ons look neat as well. My brother geared one up, I tried to advise him to go with compressed air off belt pulley and his air tank reserve would make it live. He didn't want pump on side of engine but rather opted for belt pulley drive trying to make it just a bit neater. He didn't listen as when he had left the farm we were using Farmalls with belly pumps. He didn't realize pto pump would interfere with his shifting as it did. I warned him of this and advised, that with air you would at least have live power.

Rob: Actually it would be quite expensive. The torque tube where hydraulic sits has a flat surface on top. The Super A also has a hole at front of engine block for mounting pump which is driven by timng gears. So to install a factory hydraulic unit from a Super A you would need to change engine block and torque tube. You could likely trade tractors for less money. If I were you I would do a bit of shopping first.

Not that I would want to have another one but I remember many years ago, my Dad bought an A that had a canister that set under the seat with a large pulley. Seemed there was a pulley made to slip onto the PTO to drive it. All I remember about it is the frequent belt slippage and the smell of burning rubber! Oh the good ole days of "add ons". Seems like this canister was about the size of a 30# freon tank. Anyone remember?

Hugh, If I remember correctly, that cannister would be the exhaust lift for the tractor. Farmall used pressure from exhaust to lift implements. As I havn't seen too many of these factory arrangements and they are probably rare. I am only 18 and wasn't around when these were in wide use.
Hope I could be of some use.
