How important is the serial number on a Farmall A? If the serial number plate is missing will it be hard to buy parts? Is there any other way to tell when the tractor was built? Thanks for any info.

Not really, look at the major castings for a raised group of numbers and a letter like 6*25*N. In the example, the * will look like a screw head. This part would have been cast on June 25, 1944. If most of your castings numbers end in the same letter it is likely that is the year of your tractor. Some pieces were made (cast) ahead of time and waited in storage until they were put on the assembly line. It is possible that the tractor was sold sometime in the following year from when it was assembled. Post the letter on most of your heavy cast pieces and someone will tell you the year.

Another clue as to year is to look for a raised boss (flat spot) below the very front spark plug. Under years of paint and grease/grime you will find a number that should start with FAA******. This is the motor number and the early models had matching motor and tractor serial numbers.
