How big a job is it to eliminate the TA and replace it with a straight-through shaft of some kind? How expensive? The drive line on my 300 sometimes acts like it is binding somehow and I suspect the TA! There is sometimes just a rough feeling when driving the tractor like something is out of alignment or binding. Any of you "Red-Iron" boys been through this situation?

Thanks for the feedback fellas. The binding is with the TA in high range (it may not be the culprit - guess it could be something else badly worn in the drive train). I'm gonna re-check the adjustment of the TA clutch linkage and go from there. If the tractor doesn't get any worse before winter, I'm gonna split it apart and have a good look and probably more questions..... .RP

The previous posters are more knowledgeable than me on old Farmalls but I have torn into 400 without TA and it looked like TA had been replaced with a simple shaft with female splines on each end. I probaly missed something though. Whatever had been done it worked fine. Everyone has their own opinion but I would give more for a Early Farmall without TA. Most people in Southern cotton belt thought TAs were in same class as crab grass A LOT OF TROUBLE.

Just had to add my $.o2 worth here. We had a H, Super H, M & 300 growing up on the farm in Minnesota and the 300 was always my favorite becasue of the TA and live power takeoff. My dad put fire-creator pistons in it and added 3 inches to the rear rims with 15.5 x 38 tires. Was our main work tractor. Dad only replaced the clutch plates in the TA one time that I can remember. Like my dad would say, some people can TEAR UP AN IRON WEDGE!!! Use it when you need it and use it right and it will last a long time. Goes for just about anything. Ken

Ken I do not disagree with you at all that some people can break an anvil but on the larger cotton farms they might run 8 to 10 or sometimes more tractors. If they would not stand up to abuse by hired hand drivers they were useless.

If you do not have the TA engaged, you should not feel any binding. In fact, if the TA is out you could just ignore it, as you don't need a working TA to drive the tractor in the higher range. I also think your linkages are out of adjustment. Good luck.

Do you mean by drive line binding hard to get out of gear if you do try pulling TA leaver if it releases TA is out of adjustment. use adjustments it service manual.

Second opinion same as first, the cost of elimination will almost equal the cost of repair. Tractor will be worth 25% more with TA.

Say, it's pretty expensive to go to the trouble to eliminate the 'TA'. For that labor cost, and another 400 bucks, you could have the thing replaced, good as new. Think of the value to your tractor.
good luck
