I was visiting with a fellow collector recently and I mentioned that my M just didn't seem to be as alive as what I thought it should be, I told him that I just had done a tune-up and that it didn't improve any. He wanted to know what specs I had used for setting the point gap, and I told him .013, the only specs that I could find, he said to reset the gap to ,020, and also to make sure that the mechanical advance was working, and not all gummed up. What a big improvement, the old gal runs like a top now. I really think that the points gap was the real key here, as the advance mechanism was not all that bad.

what you did in opening up the points was to advance the timing.

I didn't look in the manual but I think .013 is the gap for a mag and .020 is for a distributor - could you have had the wrong gap for what you have on your tractor?

Yes, I did have the wrong gap, but every manual, book, etc. that I had access to gave .013 as the correct gap, apparently most of these publishers don't realize that most of these old tractors that originally had mags. have been converted to distributors long ago, you would think that the aftermarket manuals would include specs. for both types.
Incidentally, the M is equipped with a delco dist. and the points were set at .013 when I opened it up.

rusty: All operators manuals from Supers onward give settings for both Mag. and Distributor. I say onward but probably Mag. settings were gone by 1962.

Why would anyone change from a mag to a dist? I always change the other way.

I had a good reason to change my BN to a dist. My grandpa did the same with his H I now own. As soon as there's a little moisture in that mag, it quits on us. I washed the BN one time and got a little water on the mag, oh boy...had to tear that mag all apart to let it air dry, then the BN would start. I finally switched to a distributer and 12 volt charging system and haven't had a problem since.

Tim: If all mags are as temperamental as the ones I've been around, I can see them going to the scrap pile quite fast. Anyone that can tolerate one of those must have the patience of Jobe. In fact by the time I was 15 years old I had my fill of ignition engines of any description, in tractors period.

The specs in the front of the I&T manual contain both sets of numbers--one for the mag and one for the distributor.
