I recently purchase a farmall M and haven't received any books on this > tractor yet. The P\O converted it to 12 volts and didn't do a very good > job. It is still positive ground, looks like the original starter, dist, > and a single terminal altenator. They had a wire from the altenator to the > light switch with an inline fuse but there was not a fuse in the tube so > it wasn't doing anything. How do I know if there is a voltage regulator in > the altenator or not? Should I change it neg. ground? Will that cause any > problems with the starter? If it is neg. ground should the neg. wire from > the coil go to the terminal on the dist.? With the tractor off if I put a > neg. lead from a volt meter on the neg. bat terminal and the positive on > the altenator terminal I get 12 volts with it running and full speed I get > 13+. So the altenator has a neg. field. Right? Is there a diagram that > shows how it should be wired after a conversion?

> It has power steering but isn't working very well. What kind of fluid does > it take and how much and where should it be filled?

> I would appreciate any help anyone can offer Thank you Mike

Sounds like you got a real mess there! A couple thoughts….

Virtually ALL alternators are negative ground - can almost guarantee yours is too. If the alternator has ever been connected positive ground - even for an instant - the alternator has been ruined. The good news is if there was no fuse in that fuseholder, perhaps the alternator has never been electrically connected. Thus the alternator MAY still be OK. Way to find out is take the alternator off and bring it to a parts store like NAPA. They can test it, also tell you what kind of alternator you've got (internal or external regulated, single wire, etc.). You'll need this information in order to correctly wire the alternator onto your tractor.

No need to worry about electrical system polarity and the starter! The starter is polarity insensitive and will spin the right direction grounded either way.

Your what kind of fluid/where to fill power steering question depends on the steering mfr (Charlynn, Behlen or ???), and whether it has it's own separate pump or is fed from a flow divider from the tractor hydraulics.

For Dave (CT): Punch below for a collection of wiring diagrams for various generator/alternator configurations - should be one here that will apply to your tractor.

Mike..... go over to the 9N-2N-8N board and look for answers to your alternator questions.....it has been talked to death over there.

Your alternator will require your battery to have the negative to ground.
As for your one wire alternator, you will have to have a way to "excite" it for a second to make it start charging....there are lots of ways to do it....push button is an example.
After you change your battery to make it a negative ground system, you can touch a jumper from your positive bat. terminal to the wire coming out of the alternator for just a second and that should excite the alternator and make it start charging..... ..of course, your engine has to be running..... ..then with your volt meter, you should see that the output from the alternator is more than 12 volts.....13.8 is (I think) what it should be .....remember that...your alternator wire has to lead back to the battery....not to a terminal on the light switch that won't let the juice get back to the battery when its off..... ..I'm sure you understand what I'm saying.

hope this helps some.

I have all the same questions for a '47 H. I'd like to see a wiring schematic - in addition to the diagrams available in the operator's manuals.

Dave, Someone posted a wiring schematic for H/M last month or so. Look in the archives on this forum. You didn't say what type power steering it has, if it is an aftermarket CharLynn, it will have a fluid resivor under the left front of the hood. Hood must be removed to fill it. I use Hy-Tran in mine and it works fine. I would think that any type of hydrulic/gear oil would be ok. Phillips makes one called HG Fluid that also works for the application. Have fun with your project.

Dave, if you have a Char-Lynn power steering unit, the manual that came with my unit (30 years ago) says - Remove the cover from the pump reservoir and fill it to within 1/4" from top of reservoir. Use Automatic Transmission Fluid, Type "A". ALWAYS USE CLEAN OIL. Replace the cover. Good luck. Ken
