Gentlemen, I have a question concerning a 300U.Ran the tractor for ~2 hrs. raking hay with a NH rolabar rake. Then the engine just quit. Would not fire at all.Next day began checking things out.Had plenty of spark from coil and from spark plug wires, however no fire on the removed plugs with engine turning over.Problem turned out to be fouled plugs, after cleaning plugs engine fired right up and ran smooth.Question is what would cause the fouling problem. These were new plugs with less than 10 hrs run time on them.Using Champion D-21 plugs. Are these the right plug? would old plug wires cause fouling problem?Do I need to get a hotter plug? Thanks

Assuming you don't have a cloud of blue smoke, you're probably just running way too rich, and should try adjusting your carb. Main jet screw is the one at the front of the carb. Back off the packing nut, and turn it in (gently) until it bottoms out; then back one full turn, or a bit more if needed to make the engine run smoothly, and retighten the packing nut.

As bad as your symptoms are, you'll probably end up rebuilding your carb. But try this first. Good luck.

Almost any plug should last 10 hours. However, Champions seem to foul the quickest. I've had good luck with AutoLite. If you're burning oil, you'll need to select a hotter plug to extend time to fouling. Talk to your local auto parts store, and see if they can get you a hotter plug in a different brand. Is is just burning rich and needs a carb adjustment? Just a thought or two. Good luck.

To adjust the carb on our 300U my Dad used to screw the high speed jet in until the engine start to misfire and sputter and then turn it out about 3/4 of a turn. When you have it adjusted properly and the engine is working hard the inside of the tail pipe will turn a light grey to white color. If it is black then the carb is to ritch, screw the high speed jet in an 1/8 th of a turn.

Good luck
JB
