MY SON-IN-LAW JUST BROUGHT BACK MY W6. HE HAD IT ABOUT A WEEK AND THE LAST FEW DAYS THEY HAD TO HAND CRANK TO START IT. I AM GOING TO PUT THE CHARGER ON THE 6 VOLT BATTERY AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. IT ACTS LIKE IT HAS A DEAD BATTERY. MAYBE IT IS NOT BEING RECHARGED. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO CHECK THIS WITH NO HIGH TECH TOOLS AT THE MOMENT WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

You really need a voltmeter to check the charging system. With tractor running, you should get 6.6 volts or more. If you don't get that, the battery won't stay up. Other things to check are to make sure your cables are good and all the terminal connections are clean. Also, do you have a working ammeter to show if it is charging. Needs to show 5 to 10 amps after startup for the first while, then it will drop off as the battery gets charged. I'm assuming you have a voltage regulator and not just the cut out relay which will work differently.

You can check to see if your generator is charging your battery if you can disconnect the battery and have the tractor still run. I did that to my 100 and it ran even with the battery unhooked. So that meant the generator was charging the batt and running the tractor. try that and make sure you're using a 6 volt generator with a 6 volt batt. The 6 volt generator won't have enough juice to charge the 12.

Of course, that only is a valid test of the generator if you have a distributor ignition. If the tractor has a magneto (and some W-6s did) then it will run with no battery!

THANKS FOR ALL THE TIPS GENTLEMEN. IT LOOKS LIKE I DO HAVE A MAGNETO BUT WHERE THE WIRE USED TO COME OUT OF THE MAGNETO IT DOES NOT. THERE IS A COIL FASTENED TO IT AND THAT WIRE GOES FROM THE COIL TO THE DISTRIBUTOR. IT IS 6 VOLT. CAN A MAGNETO WORK WITH A COIL? IT'S GETTING DARK OR I WOULD GO TRY SOMETHING.

Eldon, G'day from Australia, what did you find out? Just looking through some forums, and see where you were making inquiries about W6s. Just wondering how you got on. Do ya reckon you could give a bloke with a Super W6 that he knows nothing about, but would like first to get it going to use it on his bit of ground he recently came across, then later, make it look a bit more like an original, just a little bit of time and direction please. I'm looking for a bit of info on them, starting from history, specifications, to an engine layout and electrical diagram, but really just what I need to do to get her going: it's been going up till about 5 years ago I'm told. Would I need to do anything with the (magneto?), ot put some oil down the bores, and what grade of oils to use, types of fuel (mine is a petrol model), would it need to be a leaded fuel, and suchlike things? Any tricks or quirks I ought to know about. Valve or ignition timing, etc. What does TA or LP mean? Are they 6vlts or 12? Anyway, hoping to hear from you. You might not have heard, but the country town I come from, called Cootamundra, 250 miles from Sydney, is hosting around Easter what they hope will be a world record ploughing attempt. They're trying to get together 3000 rigs to work at once in a big paddock outside town. I wont be there, but I'm going to try to get my Mum to go. Thanks,
dave thompson
