I know this is an old topic, but please be patient with me! I am going nuts trying to get my BN timed and running. I pulled the magneto and followed the instructions in my manual. Aligned the rotor to point at #1, Got the #1 cylinder at top dead center (looked into the spark plug hole and assured that it was on the compression and not the exhaust stroke), then turned the mag till the impulse clicked. But it won't run! Any help will be appreciated!

When I timed my a I used the same procedure you did and it worked good for me. There is a mark in the flywheel that points directly downward, when number 1 piston is at top dead center on the compression stroke, if you use this mark you can be sure that number one is tdc on compression, both intake and exhaust valves should also be closed all the way. I put a mark on the front pulley and the front cover when it was at tdc , this makes it easier to put a timing light on it once you get it running. You may also ground a spark plug to the block and crank the engine just to be sure you are getting spark. When i lined the rotor up with number one plug wire on the distributor cap, I took an old dist cap and drilled out the hole for the number one plug wire this eliminates some guessing, this may you can see for sure that the rotor is dead on the number one plug wire. The firing order should be 1,3,4,2. and the rotor rotates clockwise

Wowah! I just did the same on my B two weeks ago. Pulled the cover, lined up the dot's on the gears, checked TDC, all looked well. Rubbed my hands together, squirted some starting fluid in the carb: BOOM! Muffler shot off the exhaust manif and dented my garage door. Let's try again... didn't want to pull the cover again, sooo.... stuck my fingering #1, make sure rocker arms are closed, checked rotor position, not even close. I simply pulled the plug wires from the distrib and moved back one - fired right up. Keep working it. If the wires are set right it should at least stumble.

Not to state the obvious, but did you put your finger in the spark plug hole to make sure it was on the compression stroke? Looking won't tell you anything. Is the mag good? Has the front end of the engine been torn down--i.e., if not put back together correctly, the mag drive gear could be out of time? You might try the archives, too, if you don't get any other suggestions. Good luck!
