Hi Ya'll,

There's a 660 coming up for sale near here soon. I was just wondering if folks consider that to be a good tractor. What years were they made? What are some common weaknesses to watch for?

Are they expensive to work on?

I've been more of a JD and Moline guy (though I used to have a 1466 that I really liked), but I saw a 660 pull at an antique tractor pull last weekend and REALLY liked that tractor... It sounded great - looked great - everything! It really made a great impression on me!

I used to think I needed an 830 John Deere, but I would have to think long and hard between a choice of an 830 and a 660 like that one at the pull... :)

Pretty neat tractor. There were 6944 built between 1959 and 1963. The diesel was a D282 direct injection with glow plugs. The Gas and LP versions were 263cu. The PTO hp was 81 at 2400 rpm. The D282 is the same engine that was in the 560 just turned up the RPM for a little more horse power. The 660 also has external planatery drive units on the rear axle. The early 560 and 660 tractors had a lot of rear axle bearing failure. Most were recalled and updated with heaver bearings. The later tractors were updated before the left the factory. About the only weaknesses I can really think of would be the Glow plugs if its diesel and the TA overrun clutch which is the ramp and roller units. With a HD sprague overrun clutch set up and new glow plugs It will run like a top. M & W also made a turbo kit for it that would really make it snort. Even without a turbo you can rebuild the injection pump, lines and injectors and get over 100 hp pretty easy. It will eat those 830s for lunch.

Red Rider, I am from south central Ky and purchased a 660D about 4 weeks ago. The tractor looks to be factory all the way. Our local IH dealer put it on the DYNO and the print out showed 88.5 HP. No one here has ever seen a IH660. There are several JD 80's 820's and 830's but no IH660's. Last year we had a plow day and around 90 tractors was plowing. We made a tape and sent it to RFDTV. It was for a 30 Min program. My question is who and where could I get help in rebuilding my pump and injectors. I sure want to keep the RED tractors looking good at plow day next year.

Well, a few comments. There were around 7500 of them made originally, so it is a good investment for collectability. The D282 engine was used in several tractors (560, 660, 706, crawlers, more?) the crawler tractors were turboed so there are factory turbos and manifolds. There was also a kit from IH for high altitude use turbo. The D282 has been known to be turned up to around 100 horsepower without a turbo also.

Glow plugs can be a pain, they take time. Use at least a minute or more when engine is cold (probably more like 2 minutes when temp is below 50 degrees). Even when the engine is warm you need glow plugs to start it...

D282 was good for cracking/warping heads when not properly warmed up and cooling down. A properly cared for engine will run many hours without problems.

People will try to tell you that the rearends don't hold up - that was only the first few that were produced and most of them were repaired by IH. Same thing with the early D282 engines.

As far as value - I sold 660 diesel serial number 502 (2nd one off the line) for $3500 last year.
