Are the 358 motors thru the 88 series still the german diesel same as in the 826 and what's the difference with the 360 used in the 886? It looks just like the german 358.Are the heads on the 310 and 358 the same ones?

I will agree with KB and have one item to add. The American engines will have way better torque and the German engines are probably more durable.

Agree 100% there, Hugh. I'll add that it's not that the German Diesels don't have good torque rise, it's just that the American Diesels have so much torque rise that they make everything else seem gutless.

The D-358 is pretty durable, as previously said, but also a lot more expensive to overhaul when something goes wrong. The D-358's in the 826 had a history of O-rings going bad, which is often the culprit in that engine if you find antifreeze in the pan. IH used a higher compression piston/ring set in the later D-358's making them a lot easier to start in the cold. chris

The D-310 and D-358 are German. Very, very good engines. We have a 786 with the D-358, 7,400 hrs., never been touched, runs like new; and a 686 with the D-310, 6,600 hrs. runs just as good. The D-310 is found in late 706's, 756, late 715 Combines, and late 686's. The D-358 is found in the 826, 786, late 886's, 3088, 3288, and 1420 Combines. I wouldn't be surprised if the heads were the same, since almost everything interchages on German Diesels. The D-312 and D-360 are American built, and similar to the D-414, D-436, and D-466. The D-312 is found in the 666 and early 686's. The D-360 is found in the 766 and early 886's. The D-358 German and D-360 American don't look anything alike, you're probably looking at a late 886.

Is that still the same german 358 used in the 3088 & 3288 IH tractors in the 1980's? They list a 358 cu.in. diesel motor used in them.

Yes, very much the same as the 826, but the 786, late 886, 3088, and 3288 had an updated fuel pump and 16:1 compression, while the 826 had 15:1. Early engines can be updated to 16:1.

KB: I've often wondered if maybe European diesel fuel was a bit higher grade than we used in North America back then. I remember those first little British and German diesels coming into Canada. They always were shinking damn things, on Canadian diesel. The Farmall 560, 656 and 1066 smelled like diesels but nothing like those off shore ones.

The B-250, B-275 and 414, I couldn't use they gave me a severe headache. They wouldn't start once temp dropped to freezing. I see guys using them today, they don't smell bad and start pretty good also. Probably upgrades as well as changes in fuel. I always considered your US gasolines to be better than our Canadian gas. I had a 403 Oldsmobile in late 70s. It would always do 2 miles to common gallon better on US than Canadian gasoline, both suposedly the same octain.

You could very well be right on that, Hugh. I've never looked into what was in diesel fuel in Europe. Our 686 with the 15:1 stinks so bad when running at low idle, needs to be plugged in at anything below 45 degrees F, much below 0 degrees you might as well not even try. Once it is warmed up and running wide open, however, it runs and pulls so nice on such a small amount of fuel. Our 786 with the 16:1 never fails to amaze me, I've walked up to that one on 0 degree days without it plugged in and it fires right up.

the D310 and D358 are German bad and the D312 ,D306 US made same engine as the D414 D435 D466 and now the truck has a D530 with 350 HP.
I believe the D358 is the same engine in the 30 series as in 3488 they are 30 series and 50 sieres, not 88 sieres.

pretty good, IHC started making a block in the late 60s or early 70s that still is used today, the 436 was used till they built a v8 for ford pickups, and still in medium trucks as the dt466 and dta 530 e, the bore sizes changed in them and they use different heads but the block comes from the same casting
