I found an old farmall today. Can any one tell me is there any visable diffences between F20 or F30 This tractor has 12x38 tires and the hood gets wider in the front. Also this tractor looks wide in the back, what is the distance between tires on the wide track tractors. Where is the serial numbers on these tractors .

the serial number will be stamped in the top of the frame rail, early models it will be close to the bolster, later models towards the gas tank, there are many versions of the 20 and 30's, however there are a few main differences. the main difference is piston size, and hub bolt patterns. many were inter-changable but some were not. send me a picture and I can tell you what you have

F-20 or f-30. The easiest way to tell quickly is to check for water pump F-30 has pump, F-20 does not have pump. Other differences are f-30 is larger physically and rear wheel hubs are inset with casting sticking out about six inches whereas F-20 was flat. Serial no is on left bolster and on plate mounted on tool box.

PTO on f-30 is engaged via vertical shaft on top right side of transmission ; on f-20 pto lever is located just below frame rail on left side . hope this helps, baldy

Another simple way I've always used to tell them apart if no other identification is visible is the housing for the bull gears on the rear axle(the part that drops down from the main axle housing to where the wheels bolt on). On the '20s it's roughly two inches wide, and on the '30's it's close to four or wider. I've never measured them to be certian of these specs, but if you can find pictures of both either on here or in a book that shows this part of the tractor it will be immediately obvious. Also, the gas tank on the '30s looking at it from the front or rear is taller and a more rectangle shape while the '20s tank is pretty much square.

Tim, the F-20 has the oil filter between # 3 and # 4 cyls. the F-30 has it between # 2 and 3. the ser# is also located on top of the frame (both sides) just behind the rear bolt that holds the engine to the frame.

Where the bell housing bolts to the frame the 20 has one bolt on each side and the thirty has two bolts on each side. The serial # should be stamped into the top of the frame rail on the left side just to the rear of the bell housing mount,or on the bracket under the gas tank behind the tool box Good luck Dean Minn

The best way I found to tell F-20 or F-30 is the gas tank. The 30 gas tank is considerabbly bigger as far as the height goes. I can usually tell when driving down the and see a few sitting you can tell instantly.
