Does anybody know the first year Farmall made an A series tractor with a crank start? (I'm researching this for my father-in-law. He's pretty sure his dad's tractor when he was a kid was a Farmall A with a crank start; I've seen some postings about Farmall B's with crank starts but nothing about A's, so maybe he's mistaken in his recollections.) Any insights are appreciated!

Battery and starter were considered an option on all As one after 1940 without starter would be rare I would think. First A with starter was FAA 18282 built March 18 1940 (from Farmall letter series tractors book) some earlier ones were probaly retrofitted with starter this required torqer tube and flywheel to be chaned though. PS looked in parts book and SN 501-54386 (this would be into early 1941) shows torque tube witout starter hole so it is hard to say for sure when they started a offer starter.

Hugh is correct not only did they not have a starter or no place to mount one, but no hyd. either, we got one sitting in the shed used it to spay around the fences and hedge rows when I was a teenager.I'm not sure what they used it for before that, other then pulling loose hay and stray up in the hay mou, maybe plowing.Still had horses then.

Bill: None of the A tractors, not even the ones with starters had hydraulics. The factory hydraulics came with the introduction of the SA in late 1947. There may well be a few A tractors around today with hydraulics. Some one has either misnamed tractor or changed engine and torque tube. Quite a few misnamed tractors out there, new paint and decals put on by people who just didn't know. Then there are those resale, rebuilder artists, who realize a Super will bring more money.

Hugh, did the vacum lift come standard after 39, or was that an option, or was it sold by some one for that tractor.I believe the one that is in the shed had mech.lift??I thought that the A got hyd. before the super A came out.Learn somthing everyday!!!

I suspect that mechanical and exhaust lift were both IH options. I have seen a lot of A tractors without either and have seen them with one or other. I think more so than today many items were options. Farmers of the mid part of the last century were a lot more frugal than they are today. Those guys saw the dirty thirties, these guys today think they have arrived.

They started to make the Farmall A in 1939. All the A's through their production were able to be started with a hand crank.

You are right on years of production, however did not answer question. The first few thousand built in 1939 did not have a starter, nor indeed did they even have a hole in the torque tube for one. This was discussed on here in the past two weeks so it is in archives. If I recall somewhere between 3000 and 5000.
