I have been looking at a 1966 IH 140, no attachments. It starts and runs well, needs paint, PTO Belt pulley and hydraulics with rear lift bars all work well. It has new rear tires. It has what sounds like a bearing going bad in the tranny and it needs brakes.

I have talked him down to $1,900, is it worth this??

Thanks ahead of time!!

FYI - I am located in southern IL

Better buy it. The transmissions on the 140 and similar tractors are notorious for noise. Could be nothing is wrong with the transmission. Brakes are a bit of a chore to fix on a 140. You have to remove the final drives.

$1900 sounds like a good price, Especially when a new tractor is $14K and up. Last year in my area of MI. I saw a IH-A looked very nice from the road, asking $3600 it was gone in 2 days. came with mower, plow and snow blade. I would love to have a smaller machine like a A or 140 or B for $2K.

From the description you give, I am surprised you have had tine to procrastinate. Brakes are relatively easy to fix. Bearing is another matter. Does tractor pop out of any gear when pulling. Noise could also be in final drive, jack each rear wheel and check for looseness up-down or in-out. The beauty of these little off set tractors is they are still relatively inexpensive to fix. Believe I farmed with tractors up to 125 hp. I kept a Super A and 130 for retirement.
