First of all...many thanks to everyone's advice concerning my thermostat. Your advice should prove very helpful this weekend when I tear into the thermostat.

While I'm replacing the thermostat, I thought I'd go ahead and replace both belts up front as well as the flexible tubing from the thermostat. What is involved in replacing the alternator and fan belts. I haven't looked at my tractor since deciding this morning to undertake the job. I imagine I'll have to remove the fan to get the fan belt on (which I've never tried). How about the alternator belt? Do I just loosen or remove the alternator to slip a belt on? Any helpful tips would be appreciated...

Thanks-

Do I first need to drain the coolant from the system before opening up the thermostat? If so, how do I go about this?
Thanks for your responses!

You do need to drain the radiator....there is a valve under the radiator. You need some kind of funnel to catch the fluid and keep it from splattering all over evrything..... I put a little extension on mine to make it easier...

Thanks for the tip...

After refilling the radiator, is there any need to prime the pump or anything of the sort? Or do I just fill 'er up and go?

Actually, I guess you ought to fill it up and then start the engine to get any air out of it, then top it off..... ..

Replacing the belts on an H usually are fairly simple. Both the pulleys on the water pump and generator have sheves (split drive pulley halves) that tighten the belts by adjusting the front half of the pulley. There should be set screws or bolts that "set" the shev on the shaft. These are SUPPOSED to have a lock nut on them that has to be loosened first, before you can back the set screw out. (The originals on my '44 H were a slot screw, not a hex, like "modern" set screws.) You'll be able to see the "splits" on the shaft where the set screws have to be alligned. Loosen the set screws & loosen the shev all the way, take the belt off the bottom pulley and then the top. Generator works the same way, but take it off the generator first. There are square lugs on the water pump pulley that takes a spanner wrench, but most farmers used a punch to move it & the generator shev has holes, also took a special wrench, I think, but was generally "punched" too. BUT...it'll probably take a LOT of PATIENCE and PB BLASTER (not necessarily in that order) to get them loose. Be carefull when you loosen them - I broke the front shev on my H's water pump a coulple of years ago when I was tightening the fan belt. The shev was available from C-IH, but was more than $50.00 & had to take the radiator off to get at it. AND as long as I was that far into it, I boiled the rad, put a kit in the water pump & had a couple of hundred bucks into it before I was done. Be sure to check to make sure the shev wasn't welded to the shaft-this was a common fix for a front shev that was allowed to run loose and ruin the threads. If its welded, you'll just have to "fight" the belt off & on (not fun-one of my H's is this way). Good luck, have fun & be careful, those fan blades can give you a nasty cut as you fight the belts over 'em. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

The front half of the fan belt pulley unscrews which loosens up the belt enough to get it off the bottom pulley, then you can get it off the fan. There is a set screw, and it is probably stuck. I had to tap mine with a punch to get it to start tur

Krey unless you are saving the old belts for a backup, cut them in two to remove. To install, the alternator belt has to be routed around the fan blades first. Then the main belt can be installed. On the water pump there is an adjustable hub for the main belt. You have to loosen up the set screw then you can adjust the hub. It will probably take a lot of penetrant and work to get that hub loose. Be careful, you can crack that hub with too much pounding.
