The temp gauge on my M stays on "Cold" when running, even for extended periods of time. I took the end out of block and took my zippo to it for a few seconds and the gauge worked just fine. Should I start with changing the thermostat?

I have a 1950 M that I have had for two and half years. I resored it to excellent ruuning condition, but it too runs cold. I flushed the cooling system, put the proper radiator cap on,installed a new thermostat, and temp. gage; and it still runs on the cool side. But it runs fine like that

Put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator...it will heat up.

Jeff, My M is the same way. New thermostat and temp gauge. I don't have any implements yet to provide her with a workout, but I have an old motorboat on our property that has a collapsed hull. I hook up a logging chain to the back of that boat and pull it in second with the M. The flat rear of the boat just bulldozes through the ground and even that only gets her to the low end of RUN. If I let her idle a bit, it's back down to cold. Just make sure you have a thermostat (my M came to me without one)and give her a good workout. -BTD

The radiator capacity on these old tractors is such that they will never get warm without a working thermostat unless you work them very hard. Even with a working thermostat, there may be enough bypass to keep the engine cool unless you do some real work.

Jeff , does your M have shutters on it, our 1939 M does and it will stay in the cold range unless you are putting it to serious work, I just shut the shutters a little when I'm playing around in the wood lot. If you don't run shutters I would guess thermostat replacement...but if you work it hard does it move into the "Run" range? If this is just a cool weather thing wrap a blanket on the grill...good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontaio
