What's causing my M to diesel when you shut it off? It has a fresh tuneup, timing is on the mark, carb set correctly, and runs really nice. Any ideas?

try adjusting the idle stop screw for a lower idle speed

Are you using an alternator? If so, change your pigtail to one with a transistor, or switch on the lights after you 'shut 'er down'. I've had a few that did this very thing & it was caused by a current backflow to the distributor, due to the alternator's cut-in / cut-out RPM's & switch capacity

Thanx for the reply. It sounds like something I'll try... Where does this transistorized pigtail go to. I have a new Delco 1 wire setup. No transistor. Can you be more specific? Come to think of it, I pulled an alternator off an MD that had a transistor. I can use that, but don't know how to wire it in....Thanx, Dave...

Not to jump in the middle of what someone is talking to you about, but with a one wire alt. you should not need a transistor. None of my tractors have them.

Your positive post on the Alt. should be hooked directly to 12 volts of current ALL the time. Your m should not diesel with a one wire alt.

Now, It will run after ignition switch is turned off if alt is wired to cold side. Remove wire and install on other side of switch, which will be 12 volts constant.

Questions I'll e-mail a schematic

Dave, 2 questions. Was it dieseling before the tuneup? What spark plugs and gas are you using?

I forgot to mention, D-18 Champion Plugs. It's a good tight motor and tractor. I think originals were D15 for the M

Yes it did before tuneup. I'm using unleaded in all my gas tractors. The only thing I can think of, is a faulty cutoff switch that is letting some juice thru. I haven't checked that possibility yet

I am courious, if you start the tractor and run five minutes, will it shut down alright. Then does it diesel after getting up torunning temperature or after working it. If this is the case and I suspect that it is. The problem is not the alt or diode, but rather the fuel that you are using. The fuels today are not high enough in octane and lead. I have a M and H that have overbores and 5000ftaltd. pistons, they absolutely won't shut off, other than killing them, without using octane boost. This you can get about anywhere. You can test to see if alt is problem,by disconnecting wires(all wires)from alt, and run and shut down.
