Levy stand on the distributor side of the H. Look 5 inches to the right and you will see a 3 1/4 inch diameter cap with a wing on it, if original. It may be a flat plate with a bolt in the middle. Turn it counterclockwise and remove and add 6 quarts of oil. The oil actually pours through the timing gear cover into the oil pan.

Thanks Red. What's the vertical canister to the left?

it's the oil filter cartridge cover (holder), when you change oil, remove the bolt on top and take the filter cover off. "I do Red's lite answer work." RKS

There is a little square nut in the bottom of the oil filter assembly. If its not torn up, unscrew that to drain 2 or 3 tablespoons of oil before removing the cover. The big nut takes a 7/8 inch wrench on that nut.

When you change the oil filter, take the time to dig out the old rubber gasket that the can squeezes onto. A new gasket should come with your filter. You don't have to replace it each time, but the one in there may be ancient.

When changing the oil filter which should be done every 100 hrs or so, take the time to make sure the canister is properly seated in the groove where the rubber gasket is positioned; this can be tricky and result in a persistant leak if you don't get it right. There is always a danger of overtightening too. On top of the canister there should also be a copper sealing ring where the bolt goes through. Obviously, if you change the filter, you should change the oil. I assume this tractor has been using detergent oil. If not, there can be concerns with sludge. I assume the engine is clean and sludge free inside?

I have a Farmall 400 Torque Amplified (gasoline model) and wanted to know where to add the oil and what type of oil?

When I started working on my H I bought an operator's manual and a service manual. These have been very helpful and I consider them a must if you plan on doing any maintenance on the H.
