I installed a new vr awhile back and polarized incorectly. The vote meter showed a discharge all the time & my battery went bad.
I am replacing the bat., can I redo the vr now or should I replace it again and then polarize it?
Thanks for the help.
Kelly

KD, GREAT info and explanation by Jim there, I will just add a few more tid bits.

First, as he well explained but for your information (just in case you remain unaware), ITS THE GENERATOR, NOT THE VR THAT GETS POLARIZED

Second, its sure worth a try to start all over and Polarize the genny as he described BEFORE your fire her up then see what happens ????? ?

Third, a potential problem is if you start up a genny thats polarized opposite from the battery and she ran long enough THE VR MAY HAVE LOST ITS MIND LOL and be injured as he was talkin about. If you ever let the smoke out of those devices that are shot ya know..... ..

Hook er up,,,,, ,,,,, POLARIZE,,,,, ,see what happens ????? ????? ????? ????

Im not sure just how you "polarized incorrectly" heck she may be fine, its just if she were polarized but then you reversed battery polarity and failed to re polarize things (The VR) may have got messed up, LETS HOPE N SHE MAY WELL BE FINE

IF STILL NO CHARGE post back n one of us will guide you through troubleshooting to tell if its a VR or a genny problem

Voltage regulators can be affected by incorrect installation/polarization if they have any solid state components (A diode or two, or are modernixed hybred transistor/relay units). Some are less sensitive to reversed connections. The other ingredient is if they were cooked from the leads being connected wrong and current flowing through the wrong contacts, or windings.

I would take the cover off and as it comes off, I would smell for the pungent burnt motor smell of overheating. I would look for toast colored coils, and contacts welded together. If I found none of these, I would try to use it.

Polarizing one of these systems just passes normal current through the field windings (and armature as well, but not intentionally) This field current causes the field iron poles to become correctly magnitized North/South. It is done by momentarily connecting the lead going to the Amp meter to the lead going to the big terminal on the GEN. These are ususlly labeled BAT and GEN (or ARM) on the VR terminals. The Field (F) terminal must be connected to the VR when this happens, and the battery must be charged up, and the VR unit must be grounded (as it is when attached to the tractor thrugh its mount). The small spark that happens when this "polarizing" takes place indicates that current is passing through the generator (hopefully both the field to polarize it, and the armature incedentally).

The VR (in this system) provides a ground for the field circuit. Thus when operating, the field gets "powered" by the armature connection, and grounded by the VR. The VR then adjusts the resistance in the field by viabrating contacts, and built in wire wound resistors, to keep the voltage constant. The Cutout relay in the VR (bigger contacts) disconnects the Gen from the BAT when the tractor is shut off to keep the battery from going dead. I hope this helps, John T and BobM have additionsl Info stored here on Gen systems. They are also well versed in the system. Look up polarizing in Search For above, and gain tremendous info. JimN

Jim, Some people (often including myself) also advise to dead ground the gennys field post when polarizing to insure its well grounded in case the VR isnt or the VR's field control circuit is open. Thats probaly a good idea cuz due to the armature being grounded youre still gonna get that polarizing spark causing some to believe "hey I got the spark so she must be polarized" !!!!! ! The short answer is still just touch BAT to GEN/ARM on the VR which almost always works.

Love tricity chat

Take care Jim
