I have a Cub that had a broken block at the front where they all break. I took it apart and bolted then welded it together. When I put it all back together I aligned the timing marks on the crank, idler, governer, etc just as the book said and I can get it to pop (fire one cylinder), but not run. I followed the I&T to the letter, but my question is how do I know that the rotor is in the right place with respect to the mag? The rotor can be put in in almost any direction and I'm concerned that this is my problem, but I don't see that referenced anywhere in the I&T. I got the engine to #1TDC and got the snap from the mag just as the timing mark is aligned, still doesn't want to run. I have good spark when I pull and ground the plugs and plenty of fuel through the carb.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks to all.

The rotor on the mag has to be snapped past #1 plug tower, when the #1 piston is at TDC the mag should have already fired.

Did you get the tractor started? Hal

Yes, I was able to tow it and get it to run. It starts very hard, even with jumper cables, I don't think it would start without towing it. I still think that the timing is off, but it ran very smoothly when I did get it started. I'll keep playing with it.

OK, I used that manual and I think I got this part correct. My question is the location of the rotor within the mag. I followed these directions exactly, right to the coupling snapping, but the rotor can be located in 3 or 4 different positions where it points "near" #1 lug, but which position is correct? Should the rotor be right before #1, right after #1, centered, etc. Is there a way to preset this if it is all apart in your hand before you put the mag in?

Thanks for the input.

You want the rotor as close to the No1 lug as you can get it. When you install the cap the rotor should be pointing to the lug in the cap. Hal

You need to bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Remove the No1 sparkplug near the radiator and have someone to hand crank the engine while you hold your thumb over the plug hole until you feel compression. You can drop a large handle screwdriver on top of the piston and then watch the screwdriver rise as the
engine is slowly cranked until it quits rising. You should be at at TDC and your timing mark should be aligned with the pointer. Make sure the handle is big enough so you don't drop it on top of piston.

After your No1 piston is at TDC remove the cap and see where your rotor is pointing. It should be at the No1 plug tower that's close to 1 o'clock. If it isn't you need to pull the mag
and turn the rotor to that position and reinstall the mag. Your plug wires should be in this firing order on the cap since the rotor turns CW.
2-1
4-3

Once you have the mag installed make sure its rotor is aligned with the No1 plug tower. If it isn't, pull the mag again and reinstall before you move the engine off TDC. If its rotor is at No1 try starting the engine. Hal
