Hi, need a little help on figuring out the likely color of my sickle mower for my farmall super C with fast hitch.

Main body was painted international red (no problem there because I can see the remains of the paint.

Pitman stick appears to have a white bearing end and a blue sickle head end. The stick is natural at this time. I believe they originally came painted all white?? Opinions??

The bar has no paint on it that I can see. Maybe painted dark blue or black?? Opinions??

Thanks, Terry

Main frame is red and all attached parts are blue including the bar. The pitman is IH cream and the swath board is red. Check with IH archives Paint committee. They will have info on it. Go to Wisconsin Historical Society.

I looked in the archieve for color commitee and could not find anything. If someone has a picture of what they typically look like or other suggestions, that would help. Thanks, Terry tfringo@aol.com

The colors I told you are correct. I don't have a picture of one with good paint, because all of mine are rusty. If you will type in IH archives, click on it, then click on paint committee decisions. go to mowers and look for C-24-P or C-21-P the paint decisions are there as I told you. I looked to make sure.

Everything except the fast hitch prongs and the frame they are mounted to.

Just in case anyone else searches for paint on the C-21-P mower I am posting the following observations. Based on the information I found on the IH paint committee decisions and observations of my own mower. The main frame of the mower (two point frame, pulleys, bearing housings, small brackets, pins, control rod, lift spring, sheilding) seem to be painted red. The pitman is painted cream and the bar assembly painted blue. The mold board rod was painted red and the wood was natural. Just my humble opinion. Thanks, Terry

The pulley and some other parts on every C mower I have ever seen was blue.

I have taken apart 3 IH sickle mowers that were very similar design (upper and lower pulley driven by PTO/not the balanced head design). 2 were C-21-P. Thought the paint was rough, the paint on the pulleys was red. I look into every little nook and cranny to confirm this. They did not look to be repainted. No exageration. Just my humble opinion. I didn't find any color pics in the archives of the fast hitch mower, but I did find a couple of the axle mounted mower in 1950 and they do appear to be nearly all red. The bar was in hay, but I assume it was blue. There was also one of the M and mower either a 27 or maybe a 31 and it to was mostly red. I sent the archivest a request for a color photo of both the C-21-P and the C-24-P. I may hear back from them in a day or two. I think I have your email address and will send the pic to you if and when I get it. Maybe we will find out for sure what the correct color pattern should be.

I have found pics of the 31 mower and it does have a blue pulley on it. I have one and it has a blue pulley on it as well. My C mowers are all rust, so I have not seen what they should be, but My uncle has one he restored 25 years ago and it is blue to. He say's that is the way it was when new. I just called him and ask. I don't know for sure what is correct, but will try to find out as I have 3 or 4 that I plan to restore. Let me know if you find out for sure.

Restorations can be hard to do at times. I am somewhat of a pureist at heart. I looked at the mower that I have in my drive way. Those pulleys were always red from my observation. I will say this. I have seen NOS parts that were not the same color as the item on an assembled unit. I can also immagine that when they ran out of blue paint, they would just use red paint, maybe red could be substituted for blue but not visa-versa. There are exceptions to many things. I will paint them red. Thanks, Terry

I don't think it mattered. I believe they used whatever they had at the time. If you study those paint decisions you will notice where they changed colors from one to another and visa versa on lots of things. Especially when a different plant started making things that were made at a different plant. I got a letter back from the archives, and they could not find a color picture of a new one. Maybe some old advertising lit may have one. I have a Super C ad pamplet and the tractor is the only thing in color all implements are in B&W. If you find a pic, please send me one and I will do the same. Good Luck.
