I have what is probably a dumb question for you guys. On the bottom of the brake covers of my H, there is an adjustment bolt with a nut to lock it in position. What is this supposed to do? All I can think is that the bolt pushes up on the brake band, but don't understand why it would have to do that. Also, I would be curious as to how I should properly set these bolts, once I learn their purpose. Thanks!

The purpose of the set screw is to help center the brake band and lessen the rubbing and wear when the brake is released. I adjust mine this way: apply the brakes firmly and lock them. Loosen the lock nut, turn the screw in fully and back out ½ turn, relock the nut and you are done.

Yep, I guess that is the reason they print up a book. When I looked at it...it seemed to be for no useful purpose. See, Old dogs do learn new tricks.

that screw is to keep the brake band from rubbing on the top of the brake drum all the time. you screw it in tight then back it out a turn and lock the nut.

If you look in the manual to adjust brakes it explains exactly what that bolt/lock nut is used for. You will need an operators manual for a restoration project as well as safe operation of your tractor. Good luck with your project. Dick

If it were a drain plug, I would think it should just be open to drain. I had to replace the pinion seals as well as the oil-saturated brake bands due to leaky seals. I just would like to know what their purpose is, as I am totally restoring the tractor, and don't care to have ongoing issues after I put it back together.

That thing does not adjust anything. I have had the covers off and looked at the item that you speak about. The best I can figure, it is maybe a drain plug.
