I was wondering if the H"s first gear can be changed to a faster one. I mainly use my H for pulling and going to see if i can get more speed out of first gear. Wondering if a M has a higher gear and if it will work? Thanks Evan

H tractor regular first gear speed at 1650 RPM with 13.6 tires, 2.68 MPH. H second gear with same 3.65 MPH. H tractor first gear with W4 ring and pinion installed and rest the same, 2.96 MPH.

M gears won't fit an H, they're two completely different-sized tractors.

Now, maybe the gears out of a 300, 350, 460, 544, 656, 666, or 686 might fit... The transmissions in all these are descended from the H. Don't know what that will do to the ratio, though.

Naw,

Got your sizes mixed up a little. :>)

544, 656, 666 and 686 are all the same group-sized tractors as the M.

That "H" line stopped after the 460. Same time as the large frames came on the scene with the advent of the 706. The old version "large" sized tractors became the "small framed" tractors from then on.

That large frame/small frame scheme of row crop tractors carried right on thru from 1939 until IH's demise and the only "burp" was when they switched the big guys into being the little guys. :>)

I know nothing about the later stuff but I do have a 504. That rear frame and center section is derived from the H, 300, 330, 340, 460, etc. It is definitely not M material although it had more horsepower.

I was under the impression that 504, 544, and similar models thru 686 were all derived from the H.

I need a second opinion.

Wardner, everything on my 666 is a lot heavier than the 504 I use to have. It is more than a ton heavier.

OK Geotge,

Are a 504 and 544 similar designs. If so, I believe that Allen's post has an error.

Wardner, I meant to say 664 not 644.

Wardner, I have no experiance at all with the 544, but my chart shows it weighing a ton more than the 504 as well. I do know that the 644 is built on the same chassis as a 656 utility. Someone posted a few days ago that the 544 was the same as the 644 other than the engine. Keep in mind the 644 is a utility and was not available as a rowcrop.

There was an optional, 1 mph 1st gear available for your H. Maybe you already have it? If you have the standard 1st gear, and want to go faster, try a pair of taller tires such as a pair of 13.6X38s as used on an M.
