i have a new problem with my 354 gas tractor. while using it recently, all of a sudden it started sputtering and ended up stopping. i thought it was out of gas, and after putting some in i got it started, but it ran very rough. i took the carb off, checked the float, cleaned the carb and flushed the jets etc. and blew out the fuel line from the fuel lift pump to the carb. it started back up and i could look down into the carb and see gas flowing. so i stopped it to put the hood back on, and while driving it back to the barn it started sputtering and bucking again. while checking the carb while tring to start it, i could see there was little or no gas going in. the fuel screen in the fuel pump is clear. there was a little debris in the fuel pump under the screen, but nothing that would clog the screen. gas is coming into the pump, and when i loosen the gas connection coming out of the fuel pump, gas comes out, so i assume the fuel pump isnt clogged. my diagnosis is the fuel pump isnt working. is there a way to test the fuel pump? could anything else be going wrong? also, while looking online and with a regional case/ih dealer i can find a diesel fuel pump for the 354, but no gas pumps. the case dealer said i can just use the diesel pump in place of my gas pump, but another online dealer said that i need the diesel pump along with a pressure regulator to cut down the pressure. i would like to find out if anyone has some information dealing with the differences in pumps and whether this would work. thanks!

Scott, an IH dealer got me a fuel pump for a gas 574 last year, about 75.00 I think. Find a way to test yours first - Mine had gas running out the weep hole, still pumped fine though. Price of gas, I couldn't stand to see it run out on the ground. Like the others said, try the cheep fixes first - Some years ago mine was running so bad, i'd done all I could, was ready to buy a new carb for it. A guy whose since passed away looked at it & recomended adjusting the valves before buying the carb. That was it too, ran like new afterward.

Scott,

I just went thru this same identical problem.

Have been turning wrenches since I was 6 years old and this one just about drove me crazy. Thought maybe I was loosing my mind; or, what little I had left. :>(

Like you, my 284 was just simply "starving" on the fuel and I just could not find anything wrong. Went thru everything at least a dozen times. Had that carb apart so many times that I about wore out the threads on the silly screws.

But, it still acted up and "starved". Especially at idle and under a pull.

End of story: It was the ignition coil all along. Didn't act like a coil, but that was the culprit. Put a good used one on and it cured a whole host of ills that the tractor was exhibiting.

Made a brand new tractor out of it.

Allan

My Super C done the same thing a few years back. A buddy and me were plowing cover crop under. When I put the plow in the ground it would sputter and carry on awful. Lift the plow and tractor sounded fine. After doing all that cleaning and blowing fuel lines, cleaning filter screen and taking carb apart 2 or 3 times, I to put a used coil on it and it has ran fine ever since.

thanks, allan. i first thought about electrical problems. i checked to make sure the points were ok and that the spark plug wires and rotor all looked like they were still making contact. when i took off the hood and the air hose to the carb and watched while i tried to start it, i could not see any gas coming out of the carb. after i flushed the line from the fuel pump to the carb, and hooked it all back up, it started fine and ran ok for a few minutes. i could see the gas spraying down just like it should. then after a few minutes, it started starving again. would the coil have anything to do with this? thanks for your help.

Well, I dunno Scott.

I'm just relating my "horror story".

Every blessed thing I looked at pointed to fuel. Scrounged around, found the specs and checked that silly fuel pump over and over again. It just acted like a fuel problem.

I've never seen a coil act like that. Just did not make any sense.

Finally in desperation, I put one on, as it was the only stone left unturned. Totally different tractor after that.

I'm guessing it was just the "age" of the coil that was the contributing factor because it sure tested okay otherwise.

Just wanted to tell you, as your tractor is just one jump bigger than mine.

thanks, allan. that is a simple fix, and since that coil is the original one (34 years old) i probably should go ahead and put one in just in case. thanks again for the info.
