424 loader/ hydraulic question

Hey all. I'm having some issues with the hydraulic system on my 424. In order to use the loader, I have to close one valve beneath the seat on the driver's side and open one valve at the base of the loader controls, and I have to have the 3 pt control lever all the way up. When I open the valve at the loader controls, the 3pt hitch drops to the bottom. Is there any way to plumb the hydraulic system to keep the 3pt hitch up while operating the loader, or even be able to operate the loader and 3pt hitch at the same time?

Thanks

Just finished up rebuilding the lift box on a 444.
Had to replace the cylinder and piston. Got a good used one.
Get plenty of O rings, when you dissassemble the lift box you will find several flattened and worn orings that need replacement.

Also there is a pressure relief valve built into the piston which could be leaky.

How difficult is it to replace the seal on the work piston in for the 3 point on a 424. I have the hydraulic housing off to replace the pinion seals and was going to replace the seal on the 3 pt work piston. My I & T manual give some instructions but when I took the top cover off and looked inside I got cold feet. It seems that there are alot of linkages and a spring and a chain that has to be unhooked before the control valve and cylinder unit can be removed. I didn't want to take it all apart and not be able to hook everything back together again. There doesn't look to be very much room inside there to disconnect everything that has to be removed in order to pull the cylinder. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I think if the 3 pt drops when you close that valve, it means the seals in your 3 pt cylinder are leaking. If the valve is closed, the 3 pt should stay up, but if the seal on the piston leaks, it will gradually go down. The 424 originally had leather seals on that piston. If yours have never been replaced, likely they are bad. You can replace the leather with modern O rings, but that requires a new piston which from IH is expensive. On the 424 I had, the mechanic used a Mahindra piston and O rings which fit perfectly and was about half price of the IH. My 3 pt got to where it would not stay up at all, cycling all the time trying to keep position. The 3 pt cylinder is contained inside the hydraulic unit under the seat. You have to open up that unit to get to it.

The knob on the lower left as you face forward is the flow control and it only determines how much pressure you have. 1/2 to full. The knob on the right, below the seat is the isolator/diverter valve and it determines where the pressure goes. To the three point or to the Aux. The diagram and manual says it should always be all the way closed or all the way open. From my experience with mine and from what I can see from the manual, it's working like its supposed to. If you send pressure to the aux the three point will drop. The only thing I can think of is to use short chains from the three point ball ends to the brackets on the side of the center link to keep the three point up. I use a set of them to stabalize my brush hog in the mow posistion. Hope this helps Gary
