Hey again, I adjusted the brakes on my H today and noticed the seal on the left side is leaking bad. I know this was just covered here a couple weeks ago but I can't find it. Is that the seal where they put two back in to replace the old one. Does anybody have the number off the seal in case I wreck it when I take it out. Thanks for your patience with me. PUTTER

You get access to the seal by removing the brake drum. Likely you will have to take the seal out in pieces, as they are not so easy to remove. Don't try to remove the seal holder flange, as you can't do that without pulling the axle out so the bull gear can drop down out of the way of the pinion bearing cage/seal holder. I tried the self tapping screw system on my I-6 (like an M) That worked sort of, but the seal ended up coming out in pieces. When you put things back, in addition to the seal, be sure to get the fiber washer that goes under the brake drum retainer washer. If you don't put the fiber washer in there, oil can leak around the brake drum splines and you will still end up with a mess.

I pulled my seals by installing self tapping screws opposite of each other in the old seal cage. Then pulled with bar.

Just did those seals and bearings yesterday. I suspect you don't have the top cover off like I did, but I did have bad bearing there that cause the seal to leak and dumped bearing parts into the bottom of the housing. The seal number is 23184 and is an "SKF" seal if you have to have the number cross referrenced. I only put in one also, but if it leaks you can drive it back further in the hole and put in another one. The original seal is about an inch wide and has 2 lips. The replacement is rubber type and about 1/4 inch or so. There is a drain back hole at the bottom of the housing so if you use 2 seals don't block the hole off totally. The shaft that is in there drives the bull gears and holds up the differential so check it for slop. Mine was loose.

be carefull removing that seal as the bearing is right behind it. I use one seal, which is the replacement seal from the old style. The new single seal is made from today's neoprene wihich is far better than any technology of the 1940's. I use one seal when I replaced mine in both of my H's and they do their job. The old seal will come out by picking at it with some small chisels, finally drive a sharp punch between the seal and the housing, work towards collapsing the seal and it will pull out easily, but remember the bearing , you don't want to damage it
