sorry for the long post...
my tractor is a 2400A (industrial version of the 454). as far as i know it has a 100% mechanical clutch.
anyway, i was pulling some small shrubs out of the ground this weekend using a chain attached to the drawbar. (this involves a lot of slipping the clutch.) i pulled about 6 out. on the 7th shrub i heard a strange sound, like the hydraulic pump was sucking air so i shut the tractor off. (i"m not saying the pump WAS sucking air, just that it sounded like that.) i checked the level of the hy-tran - it was fine. i started it up again and the noise was gone. i started pulling again and then noticed white smoke coming from the clutch inspection hole - it smelled like burning hydraulic fluid. i shut her off. at some point the clutch pedal stayed down and would not come back up. i had to yank it back up by hand.
knowing something was very wrong i drove the 2400A back to my driveway - it smoked badly from the clutch inspection hole all the way during the trip to the driveway. the next day i started the 2400A - it started fine - no noises, no smoke. when i used the clutch it made that noise again. i drove it backwards and then forward and parked it so i could split the tractor in my garage. any ideas as to what happened and what is wrong? i think i need a new clutch, but what"s with the noise and smoke?

Four items for your project.
1} (I assume a wide front end) Place metal blocks between the front cast frame and the front axle on both sides to prevent tipping the tractor over. They should be constructed so they will not come out.
2} Use splitting stands, So the rear of the engine is supported well.
3} Photo everything before and during the process, and use white cloth tape to label each wire and connection for reassembly.
4} everything is heavier than it looks by 75 pounds.
Thanks for taking the news well. JimN

Hi, if your 2400A is same as ag 454 then clutch is mechanical type. Has a fork that pushes against the throw out bearing, against fingers on pressure plate. Ag 454 came with a 4 pad clutch. When we replaced the one on our 454 we installed a 6 pad clutch from 674/684. Will probably have to have flywheel turned if the clutch smoked.

There is a distinct possibility that you smoked the clutch. I will not mince words, I will just say it like it is (no offense) Pulling shrubs out should not be done with a tractor. It seems convienient, but it can be both dangerous, and very hard on the equipment. Slipping the clutch is a no no. Clutches are designed to allow slippage only to get things moving, they are a switch. If used to adjust speed, or pull gently, or feather something, they burn. The friction material is not capable of dissipating the tremendous forces that are caused by slipping the clutch. Heat builds up, and has no where to go but into the flywheel, friction disk, and pressure plate. Do not operate the tractor this way.

Pull shrubs and small trees (3 inch max) by parking the tractor, blocking the wheels with timbers (8X8X30) behind the wheels, then using a good roller chain comealong to a A frame made of 2" pipe about a 3' triangle with a U shape welded to the top to keep a chain from slipping down the sides. The A frame allows pulling up and over on the stem of the shrub while reducing forces on the chains. Do not use straps or nylon rope, when they stretch and break, they kill operators. Some may reply that it is OK to jerk them out. It is not. the stresses are not predictable, and the tractor can come over backwards on you in 1/10 second. Believe me you have just proven the point by needing to replace the clutch. Sorry, and just education intended, no offense. JimN

split the 2400A tractor this past sunday. turns out that the throwout bearing had siezed real bad. that explains the noise. i think the smoke was the grease in the bearing burning off. the face of the bearing melted on the 3 clutch fingers. the PP, clutch disk, & flywheel looked fine with no signs of heat buildup.
