Well I finally got my wife her first tractor. It ended up being an H. When I bought it I knew the shifting was a little sloppy, but on the ride home it kinda changed a little. At first the the pin that held in the shift lever come out so I put in a bolt about the same size. Well the shifting is still sloppy and it just does not fell right going into 5th gear, in the others it feels a little better but you can still move the shifter side to side a little. Could I have a worn out fork of bent fork or is all my gears worn so bad and 5th is just terrible. It popped out of gear on my going up a pretty steep hill. The tractor really has not been abused that much by looking at it and running it. See what you guys think!

Thanks Derek

I am going through the trans on my H right now.. What Larry said is true on the sloppy shifter ( I am going to have to do all that to mine as well). I can add a few things I have learned. It is very possible the front trans shaft bearing is wore out and possibly the main shaft pilot bearing. Also worn teeth on the fifth gear may be an issue. all of these things can add up to the main shaft getting floppy and pop it out of gear.

I just went through sometyhing like this on a TD6 an you may have the same problem. I've never been into an H so this may be way out in left field. Anyway the lower end of the shifter was well worn and sloppy in the shift rails. The shift rails were also worn and I also had a bolt in the shift lever. All added up to a locked shifter as the shift lever disengaged from all the shift rails. Bottom line is that I welded up the notch in the shift rail and reformed it and reshapped the shifter end so that it fit the rails better. Things are a lot better. I still need to rework the pivot bolt and bushings to tighten up the piviot point. lg
no neat sig line
