The shift lever will not go far enough to the left to allow me to shift into either reverse or first gear. I can shift into the other gears.

Any suggestions on how to fix the problem will be appreciated.

I want to thank everyone who responded to my request for help. I just fixed the M. I removed the shifter from the T/M cover and saw that the gates for 2 & 3 and 4 & 5 lined up but the gate for 1 & R was about 1/4 inch offset (towards rear of tractor). Used my long handle screwdriver and pushed the 1 & R gate forward until it was in line with the other two gates. Works as good as new. Ready for another 50 years.

Reason for delay was that I spent the summer restoring my H.

Again, thank you and keep giving the advise.

If you can shift other gears, sounds like you might have a broken shift fork or the slider has acted up somehow. May be possible that some crud got down the shifter hole and is not letting the lever move over. The crud in my H was pretty stiff stuff, almost like old rubber, but it was dirt.

Need more info. If you pjut it in any other gear will it move,or will it kill the engine? If it kills the engine that tells me that the 1st and reverse rail did not come back to nutral. common cause bottom of shift lever is wore out.
weilder and grinder will help. Bill

Bill,

Tractor moves in the other gears.
