I believe the 400 had 50-75 less RPM's than a SM. It was kind of a marketing gimmick back in the day. Less RPM = more engine life. This may cause small differences in speed if you looked it up.

SM: 2.625, 3.75, 5, 6.75, 16.75.
SMTA: 2.5, 3.875, 4.875, 6.75, 16.75
400:2.5, 3.85, 4.83, 6.71, 16.70.
(SMTA and 400, TA in high range)

Remember that ground speed is affected by tire size.

If the SM has the regular or standard gears and both tractors are set at same engine RPM with same tires high T/A the only gear that a 400 is faster in is second. 2,3 and 4 are so close in both you could never tell the difference by feel. I can notice a 400 is slower in first than a SM.

Seems to me at about same rpm the 400 gets out in front of the SM in 1st I do have bigger tires Guess I the tires is making it faster Didnt think it would make that much of difference

thanks to all

Optional low low first gear in a SM would be close to the same speed as a 400 in first low T/A. You would realy notice a difference if the SM had those gears. The information I posted on speeds is from old notes I have from figuring the actual gear ratio of each tractor. Rolling ratious of tire and engine RPM will efect results. The input shaft driving constant mesh gear, ring and pinion and bull gears are the same ratio on a SM and 400. Difference in speed is in transmission gears between SM and 400. 400 first drive gear 21 teeth, driven 52 teeth = 2.4761 to one. SM regular speed first drive gear 19 teeth, driven 44 teeth = 2.31 to one. SM low low first 14 and 49 = 3.5 to one. 400 SMTA and 450 have the same Ratio gears in them so tires or something is changing the speeds CNKS posted for a 400 and SMTA.
