Well finally got around to change the fluids today. When I took the drain plug out of the tran. on the 140 a very large amount of water came out at least a pint but more like a quart. First what or how did the water get in there? The gear oil that did come out was very guee(sp)also I guess from the water contamination. Last question for the touch controler I have not been able to find any Hy-Tran at the locaql parts stores. Is there any thing else that can be used?
Thanks,
Keith

Thanks very much for all the info!! I have learned a lot and still have a lot to learn about this older iron. But I do enjoy it all so far. I find myself riding around looking for older equipment in peoples yards. I am amazed at what I have found when I began to take notice.
Thanks Again,
Keith

Those hydraulic systems will work just fine with non detergent motor oil from SAE 10 to SAE 30. The old books say 10 for cold weather and graduated to 30 as temps rise. I run SAE 30 in all of my older Farmall tractors and have for years with nary a problem. If I use one of them much in cold weather I go to 10 weight oil or HY-Tran equivalent.

Consider yourself lucky if you only got a pint of water out of it. My H had about 4 gallons of water and only about a gallon of oil. Needless to say I am replacing every bearing in the rear end and transmission or should I say tran$mi$$ion. OUCH! The gooey oil just sounds like it still has the original oil in it. I had an old 10-20 and that stuff dripped out for 3 days when I changed it. Temp was in the 90s but it poured like molasses in january. I think it aged itself into 2000WT.

Hy-tran is a brand name. Your parts stores should have the equivalent of it, it will just have a different brand name. You do not want to substitute a different type of oil.

Water can get into the transmission around the shift lever, but it is more likely condensation. The gear oil in those tractors should be changed once a year or whatever the book says, but few people do. Farm stores will sell hyd fluid that meets Hytran specs, just read what it says on the can. You are not likely to find it at auto parts stores.

Won't Dextron II do anything Hy-trans will do? I know it was recomended for the "push-me-pull-me" Fords

I don't think the early systems really care what is in them, as long as it isn't 90W. The original recommendation for touch control was 10W, so I wouldn't use anything heavier than that. There is controversy, though about the use of anything but Case-IH Hytran in, say from the 460/560--up, or anything with the "modern" hydraulic system -- I do not know.
