without removing the head? For example, is the cranking compression signifficantly higher? Or if I were to drop the pan, are there any markings on the under side of the pistons, etc?

Regards,

Put it on a dynometer. The 4 inch pistons will add about 10 horses to the M. 46 versus 36 at the pto. It would be very unusual to find an M with the original 3 7/8" pistons.

When I got my one M It needed an oil pan and when I had it off I wiggled my caliper up into the bottom of the sleeve and measured the bore. Later down the road I tore the head off and I was right

If you pull the pan you could possibly be able to measure the bore from the bottom and the stroke by turning it over and measure from the piston to the sleeve.
