I have a 1966 IH 434 (424 in US?. When the PTO lever is pulled back without an implement on the shaft, the PTO shaft rotates at normal speed straight away - even when the clutch is pushed flat to the floor. When I put my mower onto the shaft and push the clutch pedal down, then try to pull back the lever it goes most of the way and then graunches as if a gear wheel can't mesh and I cannot engage the shaft.

I want to know what the problem is but fear it might be a tough problem to cure.

Hi Tony, had a 434 that did the same thing. Could put the PTO into gear by shutting the engine off, engage the PTO then hold the clutch all the way to the floor and start the engine.
First of all adjust the clutch pedal to the proper free travel of 1/2 inch and 7 inches from the floor plate. If that doesn't fix the PTO then
the problem could be the adjusting bolts on the clutch fingers. It has been more than 30 years and am trying to remember exact setup. There is an adjusting bolt on each clutch finger and after many years of use the head of the bolt wears a V groove in the clutch finger, so if you turn each bolt 1/4 turn then the bolt head is no longer in the worn V groove and the fingers will now disengage the PTO clutch when the clutch pedal is all the way to the floor.

Hope this helps

Tony: I wouldn't bet on it being same as 424. We discovered here last winter even some of the complete Doncaster built tractors are different in that power train.

Your 434 has a two stage clutch, in other words two discs. Pedal half way down releases the drive clutch and all the way down releases the PTO clutch. For some reason the PTO clutch is not releasing. What happens if you stop tractor engine, engage PTO then start the tractor? Then tell us what happens if you put enough load on PTO to stop it? Will the tractor starter turn it over.

It may be as simple as PTO clutch adjustment, and very likely both clutches have to be adjusted in unison. Do you have a manual showing how to adjust these clutches? If not find one, as IH operators manuals always do a good job on clutch adjustments. I could suggest your clutch is toast, however one should always try the adjustment route before spliting a tractor. If you adjust as per the manual and that doesn't cure the problem, then you may as well split the tractor and be prepared to spend some money. A complete clutch kit for a SA, SC 200 runs about $350. that 434 will be close to double that.

Does your PTO shaft have a lot of end play in it? Just a guess but it sounds like something is badly worn in there.
